The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

Thanks for all of the information!!

I have found a guy with good prices on boxes but for just material we can do it for half the price! So looks like we will be building and building...Luckily we have some time on that one!

I am ready to get this pen done and the birds in it!!My current birds won't know what to do... They are going from a 1 bedroom flat to teh penthouse! LOL

LOL, I HEAR YA! It would be killing me too to get them on in it. As for the boxes, once you get a template down, they are quick and easy, especially if you have 2 people.
Have one cutting away and on nailing/screwing and you'll have them made before you know it.
Just remember the golden eyes need a larger hole than all the others, 3" high 4" wide is perfect for all the mergansers and woodies and teal, but the goldene eyes need it about an inch bigger all the way around.

I thought Lonnie had them, but didnt see any in his current listing, so wasnt sure if he had sold out or not, been several years since I talked to him or Kattie

yeah my dad and I built 6 or 8 last year and it took us no time.. i think we are both just tired of building.. LOL we have been going NONStop on this pen since 8/21..Even though some of it was design and the backhoe digging it is still tiring!!We had the pond dug and then didn't like it.. Mark came out and said what he would do so the pen changed dractically.. It went from 50x100 woth a 20x40 pond to its current 125x75 with a 2 ponds and a canal... 4 concrete trucks later.. 5+ dumptrucks of dirt, 6+ pallets of sof.. more grasses (big tall grasses), cattails, bamboo, 54+ poles (which we broke the Auger twice digging) and 400 foot of wire.. and we still have the net to put up and a door too build!! Building the keeping pen (I am thinking 40x40) is going to feel like building a baby pen!

Have I mention we also built a chicken pen 16x24 or bigger in July for 80ish Cochins and silkies and had to convert 2 old dog/pig pens into turkey pens in May.. oh and we also built 7 brooder pens this year which one was converting the LARGE rabbit pens into 2 big brooders.. Ok I am tired to think of all we have done this year!

Hunting... You know having these waterfowl puts hunting in a whole new prospective... My dad and his friends that helped concrete the pond all go to Arkansas to hunt at least twice a year since there are no birds hardly in our fly zone anymore it seems and they were asking me about the prices on different types of birds... I laughed when they all started saying they needed to take a tranquilzer gun with them!

Amen. funny story, couple weeks ago when i had my b-b treeducks i went out to feed and I saw one on top my shed. I thought he got out,ran to get a net and realized allmy birds were in the pen. Then looked up in the tree and saw 5 more,And yea I took a fellow bird raiser hunting with me and he was saying we just killed about 8 grand worth of birds that morning

LOL I like that!!
If I could trank them I'd be set!
I too had wild ducks a lot come to the pens, will drive you nutts counting heads wont it.

I love those red breasted geese too, will have to stay in touch on those when I get ready.
As for the harlequins, if I wasnt broke from this economy deal I'd jump all over that, like you said they need a real nice pond though.
Will stay in touch on them too though would LOOOOVE to get my hands on a few pairs of them, and the red breasted mergansers, we dont get many of them around here, tons of scoters and eiders on the coast and a few old squaw but never seen the merganser, have the commons and loons out the wazoo though
