The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

Anyone here from Alabama ? I can't find any information on State permits (if I need one or not). Does anyone know if the state of Alabama requires permits for Migratory waterfowl(wood ducks for ex) ? I found a link to "obtain permit" on the the FWS\\Alabama site, but say page cannot be found when I click the link...Arrrgh

I downloaded the Federal permit application, there is a Sec. E , want to know if I have all state permits.

They have slightly different joints than normal puddle ducks, could have sprained it or something. I'd keep a close eye on him for a few days, if he still doesnt get better, you may want to catch him, not using it, isnt natural

thanks! He was using his leg..

Now for another bird problem. I just got some new birds in tonight and while we were putting them in the pen I noticed a silver teal sitting at the edge of the water. I walked right up to her and picked her up, checked her over and nothing. I put her down and she swam out in the water. After I got all the new birds in I walked around the pen and there she was again. So I picked her up. She feels really light and sat in the palm of my hand.. This is not normal. Could it be worms? Or could she have be somewhat disallusioned with it being dark? I'm going to order some wiener tomorrow to put in the head but catch her if she is still like that and worm her tomorrow.. How much worker do you give them?

at night you can often shine a light on one and catch it, but they should put up a fight. If she feel light and didnt resist much, she could be sick.
Worms, avian tb, enteritis, could be anything.
For wormer, do 3 cc of safeguard to 1 gallon of water for 3 days for her.
avian tb has no cure (often called "going light") by poultry folks. Been told by my NPIP guy it's transferred by rat dropping that get picked up by the birds, usually not a big problem in new set ups.

The bacterial enteritus can be easily cured with BMD. Jeffer's.com has it, works great.

Usually rapid weight loss with no obvious signs of illness leading up to it in any poultry will be one of those three. Not always, but those are good starting points to treat for.
Hope it gets better for you

I have only saved 1 duck when they "go light". and she came out of it on its own. Most all have ate right up till dying, I think it is TB. Good luck though.Luckily over the years this rarely happens. Like BBB said if it gets better please let us know.

Thanks I will!

Having birds is like having kids... i am at work thinking during lunch I should really drive 30 mintues out ot the farm to check on her/he and see if it is still acting that way... my dad has a friend that is a vet and I am so not afraid to call him..
Hopefully she/he will pull through... When I first got them I had one that limped around and wondering if it is the same bird. They would never get really close to another bird.

Funny story though.. Last night after I released teh new 17 birds I got in a few of them I were able to do that too... of course it was at night, they were in a new pen and they just walked right up to me! I forgot how much fun they are to hold!
