The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

I read something on the GBWF that gave me an idea. Someone suggested putting guinea pigs in an aivairy. It was for pheasants, but I was wondering if anyone has done this or would work?

Also, how would bobwhite quail or gambels work in a pen with ducks?

My Original Mandarins were egg laying machines. They both would hatch out 13 to 16 babies each until I got a egg dumping Wood Duck. Got rid of wood duck and everything went back to normal. I sold all of my original stock this winter and starting with 3 new prs all unrelated. They are not very good so far. One started laying and i pulled 5 eggs. She quit laying and wouldn't sit the rest. Finally another one is laying/brooding. I haven't disturbed her lol

In our 125x75 pen, we have 157 ducks (30 species), about 40 bobwhite and 5 pheasants. They all get along great

Ok, thanks kangababy... Now I just gotta think about it... And get a permit.

My Hottentot pair are about a year old now, but the female has not laid any eggs.

I don't really want to breed them, but i was just wondering from a health perspective if that is ok?

I remember seeing some people post in a few threads about how sunlight is important for that, so i wanted to see if that is true.

My aviary is 75% shade most of the time. There are brief areas of sunlight in one end for a few hours between 8am to 11am and the other end about 3am to 6pm, which they do tend to bask in, so i wondered if it's because of that or maybe they are not mature enough to lay eggs yet.

YES YES YES I'm sooooo excited

I just want to thank everyone who has helped me learn about ornamental ducks and all the in and outs of raising them. And don't worry, I'll get som pics once they are all settled in.

They are fine, often Hottentos wont lay til 2 some times 3 years old. Sun light does play a big role in it, but it's more duration that strenght, as long as it's day light outside 12 + hours, they are getting what they need
