The Military...

I have WHAT in my yard? :

I had not seen this post before posting what I did about attending the funeral yesterday. At the funeral I saw a young man who had already signed up staring at the potential results of his decision.

I am a Navy brat, DH was in for 6 years, I joined (They wouldn't keep me due to an injury in basic) my sister is still active duty.

But, now this is a serious decision. We are at war and the consequences could be your life. I don't say don't join. I do say if you do decide to serve choose your branch wisely. You need to be able to get a marketable skill out of the deal, and you want to look for something that at the very least lessens your chances of being killed over there.

I am incredibly grateful to those who choose to risk their lives in this way. I just wish more was being gained for the price they are paying.

When I see an article that three soldiers were electrocuted due to faulty wiring by KBG contracting I am furious inside like I have never been. Those responsible for those deaths should be put alone and naked in a room facing the mothers and wives of those men. Negligent homicide is too mild a term for what they have done.

If you were my child I would honor your decision but request that you wait until you have your degree and then go in as an officer with more options. And choose your branch and its employment options carefully.

Good Luck.

The money and and officer thing is still on my mind but i know Marines is for me. I mean the pay may not be as great as other but i love it. As for and ricking my life...i live my life with my lord and personal savior always on my mind, the way i see it is if it is my time to come home he will take me, whether it be me driving onthe back roads of home or in the desert of Iraq.

My son is on his way to AIT in Virginia....for an MOS that just got eliminated.

He was supposed to learn how to be a cook, but that is now being turned over to civilian contractors. If he doesn't get to pick a new MOS, he will be guarding MRE's for the next 3 years

Even with this little SNAFU, being in the army will get all his student loans paid off and give him a place to ride out this horrible economy.

In the Army, even during peacetime you spend at least 1/3 of the time in the field unless you have an administrative type MOS. What is the Army going to do to feed troops on training in the field? They used to give us a fresh cooked breakfast and a nice hot dinner. I guess it's all MRE's now huh?

Did he get a big enlistment bonus? They raised enlistment cut off to 42. There's a lot of people joining to ride out the economy. It will be like it was when I was in, in 82. Good luck to him. Tell him to never hold up his hand when they ask for volunteers. It's always S**t duty.

My son came home one day back in '03 and said to my DH the marine recruiter was going to stop by that day. My husband told him find but he would find himself rolling down the driveway. But my DS told his dad that was what he really wanted to do. So we talked to the recruiter and DS was in for 4 years.

He was in food services duting his tour and has been out for 2. I think he would tell you that he had some good experiences. He was in Japan for a year and then came back stateside before spending 7 months in Iraq. Before he got out of the service he went to 29 Palms in CA for 6 months teaching field cooking to other marine cooks. He even got to be on Food Network when Robert Irvine did an episode of the series Dinner Impossible at 29 Palms.

He is now a sophmore in college and is doing really well. College was not something he was ready for right out of high school. He often says that he wishes he had stayed in and may go back in after college.

My hubby was in congressionals at Ft. Carson 84-87. He warned sonny boy what he was potentially in for. One time my husband got guard duty on a completely empty motor pool. Another time, instead of going down range, they made them set up tents next to their office building and pretend that were in the field. There were all kinds of extension cords run in to the building through the windows so they could run equipment

My son is air force, stationed at colorado springs, has over 10 years in now, and plans on staying the full course. just bought a house in co sp. says he loves it,spend 1 year in Korea, 5 months in middle east and going back to the sandbox in may.As any mother I worry, but I have 3 other children I worry about also. part of being a mother. marrie

My second oldest son is in the Air Force, stationed at Kadena AFB in Japan (August will be his second year - and he's been to Iraq) - he's 19 yrs old - I have always been behind this decision my son has made for himself. Both sides of his family come from military roots. My side is Air Force/Army (my dad, both brothers). His dad (Army), Aunts, Uncles (Army, Navy) and various relatives on both sides (Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy). Now my oldest daughter is seriously contemplating going into one of the four - maybe Navy - she's 18 yrs old and has a 2 year old little girl.

If you were my child - I would stand face to face to you and tell you it has to be your decision only, and well thought out. I would tell you I'm behind you 100% whatever choice you make.

I am very proud of both sides of family being involved in the military! It's only because of GOD and VETERANS that we have our freedom - I believe!

I'd be a very proud parent!

My Son joined the airforce after playing the dickens and flunking out of college. It was soooooo goood for him. The decipline was great for him. Now he is a Major in the Air-Force and has 5 children. He went back to college and now has his masters degree. Right now you want excitement and that is fine. Later you will want security too. Get all the education that they offer, you will not regret it. This country will not always be at war and need hummvee drivers. I sure Pray. Jean
