I found a hidden RIR nest today. They’re not broody, they just didn’t like the nest apparently. I moved them from one pen to the other and had to improvise a nest. They had been laying in it. Too easy I guess.

I’m sure y’all already know this but March 10 is the set date for Easter chicks. Since I’m not shipping out to go work away from home, I’ll be trying for the elusive splash BC and getting the next generation of RIRs growing. Sounds like both bators will be hard at work. Let’s hatch some chicks!

So math me this. If I set some girls up without boys a few days ago. Would that give me enough time for them to get cleared out and then a few days to collect eggs and get them set by that day?

3 weeks. Kinda close but doable.

I started collecting eggs today. As soon as I get enough to fill both incubators, I’m setting them. I can’t wait for Easter. I’m ready for some chicks!

All 3 BC hens are laying, but I have one thing bothering me. Now I can’t sit and watch chickens all day like some people, but I have yet to see those BCs doing the chicken nasty. I’m a little concerned about that bunch. I may be setting a bunch of infertile eggs. That little guy is only concerned with running at me and hitting the fence. My big RIR boy sees me and he goes and finds a hen as if to show me that he’s doing his job. That’s a rooster that wants to keep his job!
