"Opal" leghorns....
Guess that depends who you ask.
Isabella is lavender on gold duckwing
"Opal" is whats being used for barred lavender gold duckwing with or without dilute legbars.
Once upon a time a couple breeders had the same idea of mixing the Isabella leghorns with CL to make a barred Isabella that was autosexing.
One breeder documented everything in a thread here including coming up with the term opal.
The other breeder made faster progress and geared for the pattern on crested blue egg layers. Basically a new variety of legbars. Took the opal name for them and headed for sales. The "Opal legbars" were born.
The other breeder took their time focused on the project and the educational value of sharing everything. They chose to breed away from the crest and wasn't particular about egg color.
I have some birds from that program as well as does Miami Leghorn. Mine don't have crests nor lay blue eggs and id expect his are the same as well as the original breeders. So do you call them leghorns or not?
I have been working one the same pattern without using CL for the barring gene. Therefor I don't call mine leghorns just to differentiate that project from the birds I got from the other breeders project. Out of respect to her I still call those I have my ChicKat birds. If I can get any chicks out of mine I have some interesting plans for them starting next spring.
