The Moonshiner's Leghorns

A Moony "life hack" ( what the boy informed me it's called 🙄 )
I use these feeders for chicks up to a couple weeks old. Especially if space is limited in brooder.....

Of course by about day two they've learned how to and decided it's fun to see how fast they can empty all the feed out and spread it into the bedding.
Not cool you little.....

Ordinary 1 gallon plastic paint container cut down. This one is cut to 2 1/4".....

Fits perfect inside.
You get the idea.....

Great idea, I need to try it out. I'm using 2 of these feeders right now on some month old chicks, Moony's group, and they are little pigs!

Mine tried to waste more then they eat I suspect.
That's why I had to get creative. Been doing it for a couple three years now and it's made a difference.
I have a different version for the older chicks feeders I'll post at some point.
I also clean younger chicks brooders before they need it so chips are still good. I go dump it in one of the large dirt floor pens and those guys get chips with bonus feed they get to dig through and find.

This is a really good idea! I have tons of those feeders and rubber feed bowls. Thanks for the idea!

I eliminated another pen yesterday. It was the last of my youngest pullets from last year.
Couple blue GDW I put in with the brown rooster and crele pullet. A blue SDW I put in with SDW rooster and 2 splash SDW. 4 blues in blue pen and 4 blacks in black pen.
I keep moving or getting rid of older birds I'm gonna end up not scrambling for grow out pens later. I'm not sure what that's gonna be like.
I could use some eggs from that pen this fall. :love

I do the same. Clean out before they get too bad and let the adults sort through it.

We do that also, and the older birds go ham on the scattered starter in the pine shavings when we shovel it into their pens.

The starter grower that falls onto the floor in front of my wire-bottomed brooder in my building is a great breeding ground for mealworms. I scoop the excess starter out and throw it out to the yard birds and they have a ball eating it and finding all the mealworms in it. lol

Then your husband would be like...
You sent hatching eggs to my place?...

Oh, all this time I thought you were saying you were done for the year.
You meant you were just taking a break for few. :lau
Right. Tomato, tomahto. 😇

I think as long as I am done with clinical and can help with most of the chick raising, my husband will be fine with it. Raising chicks over winter isn’t my favorite thing, but some of my projects will take several years unless I can produce 2 generations a year.
