The Moonshiner's Leghorns

When I first got chickens the older lady I got them from told me that's how you carry them. She did it. Calms them right down. I know better now and don't do it, except for a second or two to calm them down, then tuck them under my arm like a football. And yes a person can die that way. A kid rolled his car into a ravine near me one night (years ago), he wasn't hurt, but he was trapped by his seat belt upside down and couldn't get loose. He died from blood pooling into his brain as he wasn't found until morning. So yeah, I believe a chicken could die that way if you held them upside down long enough.

Ya I've seen people do it all my life and never seen one or heard of one dying. Read a post a bit back that said never do it cause the chicken would die.
Of course I didn't believe it because I too have done it all my life. Not every time I carry a chicken but I guess I'd say regularly. Lots of times when moving several hens I'll try to move a few at once by holding 3 or 4 by the legs. I don't do it for long periods of time I guess but still.
Anyways at the time I guess I dismissed the notion as honestly I do enough here because lots of misinformation now days. But guess what happened today?
Ya I was moving adults. Breaking down all breeding pens. I was grabbing roosters from pens first so I didn't get hens freaking and have a rooster get stupid. Not really something I worry about either but somehow got into that habit. I caught a rooster and had him by the legs right-side up head and partial body tucked under my arm then went to next pen and caught that rooster.
My buff rooster. I got him but while getting him out the door a hen zoomed out. Ya a buff hen. Not one I really want free ranging atm so I tried to block her with my foot then hopefully grab her. Nope not happening especially with a rooster in each hand.
I decide to quickly get them to and in their new pen so I let the buff dangle. Like not even a minute I get to the pen and go to open the door with the hand that rooster was in.
Look down and he's dead. Limp, neck all stretched eyes closed mouth open zero movement. WTH?
I gotta get back and catch that hen before she goes far. Toss both roosters in pen and watch as the buff hits the dirt with no reaction. D@mn it.
Get back over snag the hen toss her in her new pen then head back to get the dead rooster because I just tossed him into the dirt with about 20 roosters that just moved in together. They'll be doing God knows what to his carcass about now.
I get there and he's not there. WTH? I start scoping to see where they drug him to. WRONG he ain't dead, he's back. Running around the pen without any issues.
Dang that was weird. Never had that happen before. That whole like "puts them to sleep" thing sounds about right.

Did you manage to catch up that gold nugget hen?

Yes. These pens are in my barn and she was cornered although a large corner and I had my net handy.
Another bad thing was with all the chicken wrangling they pretty much destroyed my net. By the end I was netting them and they were falling through one of several holes in it.

I guess you need a new net or two now.
