All of my friend’s Silkies perished a couple of winters ago. I told her they had to be kept dry during cold spells and she didn’t heed my advice so they all roosted outside with no shelter during a cold rain/freeze and all froze to death. Their feathers are like fur and are not water resistant like normal feathers.
Yes, definitely. And some people shouldn’t own animals at all but that is a whole story in itself.
However, my free ranging chickens have a chicken house to sleep in for shelter, but most still choose to roost in trees during rain, sleet, snow, ice, etc and all do just fine. Wild turkeys also roost in trees all winter and do just fine. As do wild birds. A good healthy bird with adequate feathers can make it through bad weather but a wet silkie in freezing temps does not do well.
