The Moonshiner's Leghorns

That said, hatchery birds aren't as heavily culled and selected as breeder birds, so they probably would be considered more of a starting point to get some certain genetics, rather than where to end up.
Ah,
excellent point.
:pop

I learn something every time I go on this site and read these posts.

Btw.
I believe Moonshiner mentioned Privett Hatchery somewhere on this site previously, about the poor quality they were putting out I'm not sure if it was based on the picture or personal experience. Would like to get your feedback, sir.

First things first. We don't even know if that pic is of actual birds of theirs or not. It's not uncommon for hatcheries to use pics for advertising that aren't their stock.
Privett used to sell a variety of leghorn colors. I meet someone who had barred leghorns from welp hatchery. I saw the birds and they weren't leghorn type. They had the white lobes, yellow legs etc. but over all shape etc was bad.
I suspected they were california greys instead of leghorns. Ive also found out most of welps birds are privetts and ship from privetts.
Privetts sold "barred leghorns" and california greys.
They discontined selling barred leghorns this year
Privetts also sold BT red in the past but no longer do. They were bad. Bad type and bad squirrel tailed.
I'm also curious about their new blues. Curious enough I already contacted them about them.
No one there seems to know anything except to repeat that they are blue leghorns.
I even asked if they were like other blues that come in a variety of BBS or if they were all true blue chicks. The lady acted like I was an idiot over the question.
Ive been working towards blues myself from using an andalusian. The leg color has been a pain in the @$$. I'm curious where their stock came from and if theirs have andalusian blood and how their leg color is.
I believe ChicKat is right they may be something to work with. I'm still going back and forth on whether to get a few and see.
Ive had or seen about every rare color leghorn that hatcheries sell and most I didn't even want to mess with. IDK if I want to chance throwing money away at this point or not.

Good insight. Moonshiner's birds are more proportionate--and it takes a good eye and experience to identify the 'flaws' in birds. Also a real awareness of the type. That said, hatchery birds aren't as heavily culled and selected as breeder birds, so they probably would be considered more of a starting point to get some certain genetics, rather than where to end up.
Thanks for the insight. Glad to hear articulated what is 'off' about that cockerel in the photo.
:)
I could be wrong,
but isn't that comb reminiscent of an Andalusian blue comb?
I don’t know about that, but the back angle definitely reminds me of Andalusians. Andalusians have an upright type with a move slanted back angle.

@The Moonshiner I love you leghorns and this thread. I’ve always loved leghorns but never had them and thanks to your thread I’m definitely getting some!
Thank you and thanks for stopping by.
This deserves a happy dance....

Sorry that wasn't the dance I meant.
How about this one....

Had to chuckle when Moonshiner asked if their blue Leghorns are BBS like - -let's say Silverudd's Blues. What if they just crossed an Andalusia with a Leghorn...what would happen? Mixed type-- and blue color. (Now I know it would take more than that. LOL However, I think that may be the degree that some hatcheries would travel. The photo Blue Leghorn does seem to have white legs IMO.

Just discovered this thread and I wanted to thank you all for posting your pictures and videos of gorgeous leghorns. I tried for some years to find Dark Browns with no success. I had a nice group of Blacks but sold them because they weren't Dark Browns, to someone who really wanted Blacks. I miss having leghorns and have thought over and over again about looking for some chicks or eggs, although shipped eggs here are such a gamble (5400 ft of elevation). Still in process of getting everything cleaned up and reset for summer, but I have to say the pictures you've all shared have reminded me what I'm missing :)

I only kept three pullets from my first leghorn X andalusian cross but wanna guess what color legs they had?
I did catch that in the pic.
