This was Jack. You can see the horrible tail and the leakage haha it wasn’t a ton or super noticeable but definitely there. I thought he was just dirty at first but it stayed.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what is the wing patch you guys are referring to ??? Does anybody have a picture or something as an example ? I’m just curious and want to know more.

My Lavender Orpington cockerel that I had had a HOT MESS of a tail but his wings and the rest of him seemed okay ? But I don’t really know much about genetics or whatever.

He did have like some cream/yellowish color come in on his neck and wings/back as he got older though? Is that normal in Lavs or an indicator of bad quality ? He was hatchery so I never expected him to win any shows or anything like that. He was just from my first hatch and I liked him so kept him. He passed away this past July though.

This is the wing patch issue we're talking about.
See the white in the wing bow area? That area never wants to feather in. That is lack of mature feathers. They stay pin feathers.

Lavender is a dilute gene. Unlike blue it dilutes gold tones too.
This is an example of above bird if it didn't have lavender.
You can see the dark red area. That's the area it effects in that way. It's caused by the same thing that makes tails shedded in solid lavender birds.

Thank you!! That’s very helpful!! And those birds are gorgeous. I find this so fascinating. I think my Lav Orp that I had had that shredded tail thing but he never seemed to have the wing patch but maybe that’s only in certain patterns.

That is correct, as Danne Honour said, once you get a good one you are set. Since backcrossing to good quality will net you more good quality feather lavender.

I've seen really Bad ones, but can't seem to find them now, really old ones from like 20 years ago

I've got a hideous one out in the bachelor pad that hasn't made it to freezer camp yet, I'll nab a picture if it's not too dark...

He really did not like being cornered and would not be still, but I think you get the point, LOL.

As I mentioned before, these are AT LEAST f3 lav with tight inbreeding (half or full siblings) on bad genes.

His full brother still shows the faults, but not as badly.

The pullets from this same hatch could pass as being free of the problem until you look closely.
