The Moonshiner's Leghorns

That'll take too long. I was about to tell him plug those incubators back in and hatch SDW all winter.
I knew at one time he had access to SDW females just didn't know about males.
So negative on the SDW project using Games? I respect your alls opinions so if you think it would be too much of a hassle, I will just focus on the varieties I already have. :)

So gold male / silver hens will give me gold pullets

And silver male / gold hens will give me silver pullets

Is one way better than the other?
No a SDW male over a GDW female will produce Golden (silver/gold) DW males and SDW females which will all look alike at hatch.

A GDW male over a SDW female would be the only way to make it a sex-linked cross and be able to visually sex chicks at hatch.

It has to be gold male over silver females only. Silver/gold is sex linked. Females only get one gene and are what they have. They pass it to sons only.
Males get 2 genes and pass one to each offspring. Gold male will have 2 gold genes so all offspring will get a gold gene. Females only get a gene from dad so they'll get his gold gene and be gold.
Male chicks will get a gold gene from dad and a silver gene from mom. Silver is dominate over gold so they will appear silver and carry the gold gene sight unseen.

Only males can be golden duckwing as they can have both a copy of gold and silver at the same time. Golden meaning they have silver hackles and saddles and a red shoulder. Females can either be gold or silver, but not both at the same time.

Ok thanks 😊

Genetics to me is mind boggling :idunno

Thankfully I have you geniuses here

Oh no. I just meant no project breeding for chook to get SDW. He needs his ready by our winter time.
You need all the projects you can handle then add 3 or 4 more. That's what I try to do.

I actually learned about the sex-linked thing by accident way before I knew anything at all about chicken genetics. We were crossing lines of Game (Red x Gray, aka GDW x SDW), and I realized the pullets from the cross were all red (GDW) and the males were Golden Gray (golden duckwing) and could be told apart at hatch. It was neat. Then I learned the genotype stuff later and was like ah-ha, that's why that is! lol

I have a friend that can possibly send me SDW eggs this fall or next year, so it may be better to go that route. He just got some chicks. We shall see.
