The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Got more eggs set and next hatch due in 3 or 4 days. Small one, just a 12 egg incubator's worth.
I'll see what else the day brings. First day in a while it'll not be mid 90s. 89° predicted but I'll take it. Couple more mild days after that so if don't get overloaded with running and other chores maybe get some birds moved around. About to move out some roosters and free a larger pen up for some of my first hatches.
Not looking forwards to cleaning it and setting it up but moving 3 or 4 batches together will make things easier and free up several brooders that's gonna fill up fast.

Oh man chicken killing dogs can do a lot of damage. Hoping this don't get ugly.
Bout done keeping up with making sure my traps are baited. Think it's probably gotta be mice eating the cat food out of them. Nothing caught after the 2nd skunk so I'll go back to setting in a couple weeks.
Did catch another large egg eating snake. Tired of those big time.
Yeah it sure can get bad, especially now that the varmint is taking roosters off barrels at the low end of our property. My husband has the extra nuisance Sussex roosters on the barrels now as bait and is setting steel leg traps tonight. Whatever the varmint is, it isnt going into the live trap, so probably too big. So we shall see.

Funny thing happened. One of the Sussex roosters we put on tie cord as bait has taken a tiny orphaned baby chicken to raise. The chick even slept under him last night my husband said. The chick’s mother and siblings were apparently the most recent victims to whatever is taking birds at night, as they are no where to be found. My husband and son have a blind set up and are staking out tonight.

But anyway, yeah, the nuisance Sussex has decided to be a dad. 🤦🏻‍♀️

So, is that going to save his life?

I had a crazy speckled Sussex like that once. I had lots of breeds and free ranged. I didn't have a matching girl for him so just another cockerel in the yard.
He was pretty cool looking but I thought dumb as a stump. He'd always be out of the yard way out in the pasture during the day.
I knew he wasn't gonna last long but he proved me wrong and made it to adulthood.
After a while he started staying closer to the house and picked out a few girls to run with him. He was the best rooster to the ladies and often hung out taking care of babies while the females ran around not looking after them.
RIP Spot

I heard a rumor that raccoons love Moon Pies. I do not so no sacrifice for me! If I catch him you want me to name him Moony!?
I'm having mixed feelings here.
I'm not much of a Moon Pie fan myself but after my whole Moony VS the toe ordeal I really dislike raccoons.
On one hand Moony is the obvious name choice for everything. But a raccoon??? I can't decide if I should draw a line there or not.
