The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I don't think it's fall yet but been feeling like it. Very low 80s and upper 50s overnights. Don't know how long it will last but it has me thinking of fall preparations. Nothing like that to make me feel behind again.
Will have final count on this week's hatch tonight and then a small batch going into lockdown Sunday. Try not to set the next ones until the small batch is done. Really need to get on that 10 or 11 day hatch cycle instead of 7.
Got my brooder stand done. Haven't been running any heat lamps in the chick house since it had been so hot. Hatches have been spending the first week in my room and the second week in the mud room but looking to eliminate the mudroom brooder so need to hook up heat lamp in the chick house for the 1 to 2 week olds and probably for the 2 to 3 week olds. If they don't need it now they may soon.
Was about to put in a box fan or two down there just to circulate some air. Might be too late for that so thinking maybe a radio instead. Used to have one for years as a "predator deterrent". Don't know that it helped but it didn't hurt and then I could have some tunes while I'm down there.
Working my day off tomorrow again or at least a 1/2+ day. Need to pick up those chicks tomorrow. Won't get a lot done next few days but off Monday so big plans after that is juvie pens. That means more adults need to go and others shuffled around. Not sure on exact plan yet since no pens are snake proof and won't be without a lot of work and more hardware cloth.
Might just look into making some of those wire bottom types for next year. Always something else I need or think I do. Speaking off I've been jonesing to buy another incubator but have resisted. I mean just another cheap cheap little one wouldn't hurt, would it?
That's about all I have going on ATM.

Just wanted to share pics of the Leghorn/Legbar cockerel I have picked out to breed forward in the Crele Leghorn project. He does have a small crest but his color and type is better than the rest. I will cull all crested birds from the backcross to Brown Leghorn this next generation (crested pullets will be soft culled as layers, cockerels will be hard culled) and use only the white egg laying, non-crested pullets to breed further. The plan is to breed this cockerel to one of my best Brown Leghorn pullets from Don Schrider to improve type and tail spread.

You collect incubators like I collect art supplies! lol

We need to thin some roosters and make room for juveniles too, I feel you there.

I am looking forward to fall because I will soon be finished with the practicum portion of my program. I will get to have a life again very VERY soon!

:wee

It has been down into the low 50's here to. I actually think it was like 48 this morning. I hate the cold, but the sooner it is December, the sooner I graduate.

Speaking of predators, a possum killed another rooster on tie cord the other night. We caught it and returned the favor last night though.

I hope you and your son enjoy the new chicks! Welsummers and Lebars will make your egg basket pretty added to the white eggs. 🥰

Ya I have mixed feelings about them.
I've raised both before so nothing new and exciting and it almost feels like cheating on the Leghorns.
They'll also be cutting into room I could occupy with leghorns. 🤔 wait a minute I'm not seeing much good. Maybe there's not mixed feelings.
I don't really care about egg colors but the kid knows white eggs aren't too popular. I have a feeling he may be plotting for a start at an egg selling empire.

Those gold duckwing looking ones has one from the crele pen. Think that's the last eggs I set from it. It's been now switched to a blue crele pen. Still only males will be crele and only one barring gene but half should also have blue.
The rest are from my blue gold duckwings. Quick scan looks like lots of BGD, and few GD. 2 splash GD.
And 1 measly buff this hatch.
