The Moonshiner's Leghorns

The Buff color was introduced to Leghorns using Buff Minorcas, to the best of my research and knowledge. Minorcas are similar to Leghorns in build and appearance, and they have white earlobes and lay white eggs so it was an easier process to introduce Buff Minorcas to Leghorns to work toward getting Buff birds with Leghorn type. Buff Minorcas have white legs, whereas Leghorns have yellow legs, but the process of eliminating white legs from a project isn't too difficult.
That perfectly sensible.

Don't worry about buckets. I have a few of those out near my coop and run. I get the empty pickle buckets with lids from Firehouse Subs. They sell them when they are empty for cheap, and it helps them out. I use those buckets for many different thing's.
We love free buckets and repurposing things. Buckets can be used for so many things. Most of our nests in the 4x4 pens are buckets.

Lol, I can't stand pickles. I use buckets often too. Carrying feed to pens, filling with water to fill chick waterers from, collecting non hatching eggs, etc.
When I started cutting them down for using with my chick/grow out feeders I soon realized I was lacking in the extra buckets dept.
I saw an add on CL for $1 buckets if you bought in 10 lots. I went and got 30. Ya they were pickle buckets. D@mn things smelled like pickles :sick for like a year.
Score! And I love the smell of pickles so yay. During the covid pandemic we had N95s at my hospital that smelled like pickles and they were just *chefs kiss.* I started calling them the pickle mask and then everyone started calling them that. Sadly, they don’t smell like pickles anymore. It’s unfortunate.

I've been thinking of switching over to using the bucket nest boxes. This double wooden nesting box that was made for me is just too heavy for me to be rearranging when I do a good cleaning in there.

I have done some digging in my down time tonight and I found an article written by Dan Honour who raised Buff Leghorns. He was a very accomplished breeder, exhibitor, and poultry judge as well, if my memory serves me correct. He says in the article that prior to Buff Leghorns, the only other breed of chicken that had the buff coloration was the Buff Cochin. From another source I found that Buff Leghorns were first observed in Denmark in 1885, then in England in 1888. So to correct my previous statement, the Buff color was apparently introduced to Leghorns using Buff Cochins, if I am understanding correctly. I had once read somewhere that Buff Minorcas were used, but according to Mr. Honour’s article, Buff Leghorns came before Buff Minorcas. Here is the article and some more resources I have found. Interesting reads for sure.

According to this article written by Hilbert Pater, Buff Minorcas were developed in the United States in the late 1890’s to the early 1900’s. The buff coloration was introduced to the Minorca by first breeding a Black Minorca to a Buff Leghorn.

Sorry to go down a historical Leghorn rabbit hole but I wanted to make sure my facts were straight. lol

In that case it makes sense to continue using Minorca if necessary.
