The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Thank you!

Yes! If only the pullets would start laying already! lol
That could be dangerous. If I started getting my first eggs before the end of September I might be trying to hatch all winter.

I may hatch a few this fall if the birds cooperate. So far no big red combs on any of the Leghorn pullets yet. I have hatched over winter in the past but I don't like to.

Caught this little hussy up finally. These incomplete Black Tailed Red pullets free ranging are wilder than buck deer. Her comb is the reddest of the bunch so she should be laying very soon. She has a high tail like her sire and her type is not great, but I plan on using the Buffs to improve that. These are a far cry better than their sire for sure. Any improvement from generations to generation is better than the original Reds I started with. I will probably put a Buff rooster over her, I haven’t decided yet. Gotta move some birds around on my days off.

Caught this Legbar/Leghorn cockerel up and turned the one I originally chose to breed out to free range. The other was too "fluffy" in feather for my liking, and this one is tighter feathered. This one has better leg color also. They are all built like brick houses and bigger than what they look like in pictures. They are all going to be big roosters when they mature. As soon as he matures just a bit more, I will put 2 Brown Leghorn pullets with him. He is still developing his tail, so overlook that.

This week is a staggered hatch.
This is yesterday's. Had 7 BGDs, all hatched. 😊 5 Buffs, none hatched. 😔
Eggs due tomorrow. Those were the ones in the incubator that malfunctioned and heat spiked a few times. Had to eliminate some and moved the rest to a not ideal incubator. We'll see how that turns out.
3rd hatch went into lockdown today. Those are all eggs from the chocolate project pen.

🤞 good luck with the exchequer.
Hoping for a couple of good lookers out of the batch.

There are 6 cuckoo eggs in there that I'm wanting a nice rooster from (if I put this out there I'm more likely to get 6 pullets right?)
