The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I'm glad it's not just us then with feather eating Leghorn hens! My husband's White Leghorn hens are the WORST! They strip any rooster we put in there and eat his hackle, saddle, and tail. We supplement them with greens, produce scraps, oyster shell, etc and they eat layer pellets mixed with 18% and STILL do it!!
Try giving them 20% protein. Feathers are protein, right?

Ugh having to re-tarp a pen. Yesterday's wind split the old one down the middle. Thank goodness I have an extra so don't have to buy a new one yet.
It's always a good idea to have at least 1 extra of things, to be able to quickly replace something that wears out. Now you need to get another spare in case it will be needed too, because you never know.

That's in the works! I have few that I can use dubbled over but yeah need some new back ups.

Excellent advice! We live half an hour from the nearest useful store so we have backups of backups. I joke that it is against my religion to run out of anything, from peanut butter to toilet paper.

That's what happens when I find a really good deal on something chicken related. It's on the cheap so I justify buying a few so I have what I need, then a backup and backup backup.

Yesterday was a gloomy day here. Little colder and windy so that didn't help. Then on and off rain most of the day.
Just did some inventory and such mostly. Trying to nail down how much feed and how many feeders each pen needs to get them through 2 days.
Pulled rubber tubs from the smaller now empty breeding pens then searched high and low to find all I have that's not in us atm. Let them soak in a couple chick tubs over night in my truck then took them to work and power washed them. Now that they're clean I'll put them away in totes or coolers for the winter. That's better then my usual just leave them dirty until spring and then deal with then.
Next will be the same with 1 gallon waterers. Only using 3 right now. After that feeders and my cut up bucket parts to go with both. Try to get a count on things to see what I need to watch for deals on over the winter and have what I got clean and stored ahead of time for once.
Have what was once a goat pen that I put a few goats in overnights. Converted to chicken pens by dividing down the middle the the other direction down one half. 3 pens but not really big enough for much as far as groups. They share one wall so I'm cutting the fencing off the bottom couple feet. That'll open it back up to one pen. Might winter my Call Ducks in it but ya come spring I'll cover where the wire is with a piece of tin siding so quick and easy to convert back and forth from 1 to 3 pens.
Probably won't get a lot done tonight or tomorrow with errands to run and Halloween.

I think it's wise to get all of that done now instead of waiting until spring. It's alot of work, but you will be able to rest easier this winter knowing that they are done.

I'm waiting for Thanksgiving and turkey thighs.
