The Moonshiner's Leghorns

It would save you a ton of money on dog food if you butchered roosters to put in the freezer to feed your dogs, if you all don’t want to eat them. Dogs do well on a raw diet. It would be worth the hassle just for that. And it would allow you to practice on a few to perfect the technique of butchering them for when you wanted to eat a few fryers.

We gave my friend some eggs in the summer and she hatched out a surplus of about 10-12 roosters. She and her husband are not the type to kill anything as they have become pets to them. So we are going to go get them on Saturday and will butcher them. Free dog food! And since they are still fryers, I will fry the breast meat and may make Chicken Fajita Nachos, chicken fried rice, chicken nuggets/strips, etc.
I fed a couple dogs raw back in the day. Back when I wasn't raising birds. Raw feeders networked back then and raw feeding I guess was more popular.
Lots complained about the costs. A couple times now I looked into trying to find people to buy my cockerels on the cheap for that but had no luck. Even lately with all the Facebook groups I haven't found anything even semi close to me. Wish that was an option. I could help others and help myself. Maybe it's not so popular anymore.
But yes at some point I'll go that route here.
Myself I'd eat a lot of chicken breast meat unless that too old for fryers deal holds true. I have a lot past that age. I really need to just get on it and see. Mostly I'm usually busy with 100 other things and that seems like unfun work.

Making deviled eggs tonight for tomorrow. Not my favorite thing to do. I suck ar easy to peal hard boiled eggs.
I am making the full blown Thanksgiving dinner by myself tomorrow evening. We are having dinner for just us but we are taking food to my mom and brother and his kids. We aren’t on family dinner together terms anymore (not for lack of effort on my part) but I don’t want them to go hungry. I woke up early before my shift to prep as much as I could. I am making ham, turkey and all the fixins, desserts, sweet potato casserole… I may make some deviled eggs. 🤔

I must be weird.. I enjoy butchering roosters, especially now that my son is old enough to help. lol

I think anything past 3-4 months is no longer a fryer. That is the general rule of thumb I go by. Any older than that and they are “stew birds” is what I call them.

The eggs peeled perfectly this time!

I used to do the full Thanksgiving dinner till my dad passed. Now its me, my brother, my mom and step-dad. Plus getting over that food poisoning or norovirus thing a week ago now. Still not that into food right now.

Im making the deviled eggs and a very small ham. Im providing pie, cranberry sauce, rolls, tea, beer and the home.

Do you ever stop hatching?
I stopped for a few months in late summer to fall. Once some of this year’s project pullets started laying I wanted to set those to get a leg up on the next generation. I cannot believe my husband is supporting this madness. It must be love! We usually don’t start hatching again until March/April and we hate brooding over winter. 🥶

If I didn’t truly enjoy cooking I would scale our Thanksgiving dinners way back and not go all out but I really enjoy the whole process, even doing it by myself. We will have leftovers for DAYS!!!

Unfortunately, my husband and I weren’t blessed with loving “family gathering” type families, so when we met we became each other’s family, then Bub came along. Quality, not quantity is what is important. Not all mothers are the mothering type, and we both were cheated in that department. So I took it upon myself to be the best mother I could be and still do the big dinners for my husband and son. If you all have big loving families, be thankful and know you are very blessed. ❤️

I don’t have a lot, but I am profoundly thankful for my two fellers. 🥰

Sorry to go off topic, but you know, its Thanksgiving and all. 😆
