The Moonshiner's Leghorns

They're so cute
Thank you! Hey can you look at this chick and see what you think about the lighter color on its head and back?

Dad: Buff Leghorn (homozygous for eWh, Co, Di, Db, and Mh.)

Mom: Incomplete Black Tailed Red (homozygous for e+, hetero for Co and Mh. She may have inherited Db also since her sire appears hetero for Db).

Do you think that is dominant white showing through where the wild type down pattern would be? I had thought about that but wasn’t sure if being split wheaten would cause that. Its an interesting looking chick. Totally not my favorite! 🥸

I think I figured it out @Amer, well the admin on the Chicken Genetics group on fb did. She says my Buff rooster is likely hetero for dominant white, and that is why the two chicks I hatched so far from the pair look so different. The one with the white patches inherited a copy of dom white, and the other chick didn’t. Makes perfect sense, since dom white is often used to clean up leaky black coloring in Buffs.

Here is a closeup of the other chick that didn’t inherit the dom white gene. Fascinating stuff.. 🤯

This one looks e+/eWh and Co/co+, Db/db+, could be hetero or homo for Mh, and Di/di+.

Definitely only split for Columbian because it has too much of the e+ down pattern to be homo for Columbian. 🧐

That's what I would have said also

Ok thank you! Its is interesting. I have never seen dominant white express like that on a chick. Usually when I see hetero dominant white chicks they are painted white looking with black spots so its interesting to see how it interacts with other base colors besides black.
