The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Well I am regretting not having an incubator right now. My good rooster sacrificed himself to a bobcat for the hens. Didn’t lose a single hen but now I have no rooster. Lots of his eggs in the fridge though 😕
Do you have Amazon prime? If so you can probably find one with next day delivery. Pull those eggs out and let them get to room temp. I've heard of people hatching refrigerated eggs before.

Well, I suppose by having them as house chick's they are where you can pay more attention to that.
Indeed. It’s scientific observation.

What kind of rooster was he? I’m so sorry you lost him. 😢

That bobcat will be back.

Well this is something I did not anticipate. Both of the Buff x Incomplete BTR chicks I have hatched so far are green legged. So it looks like the Buff rooster carries a green leg gene. Both parents are visibly yellow legged, so the gene has to be coming from the rooster’s side, since females can only carry one leg color gene on the inhibitor of dermal melanin allele (Id/- or id+/-), and roosters carry two.

I will swap out males and see if the other Buff males are pure for yellow legs. I am glad I got started test mating early. 😵‍💫

Since that gene is sex linked, that would make these two chicks pullets. I can still use any yellow legged female offspring produced from this mating to breed forward, but all of the males will be hard culled. The green legged pullets will be soft culled.

I hatched some BC eggs that were in the fridge. That was a few years ago. Those chickens are all gone. In other news…

I should be getting 8 OEGBs this weekend. 2 roos, 6 hens. I wasn’t expecting them this soon but hey, gotta snatch em up when they jump in front of ya!
