After a period of silence, Brid stood and moved to stand near Fox, hoping she wouldn’t screw this up. “Okay, it’s all a little confusing, but here’s the general idea. That rock you just put in your pocket teleported you here because it’s connected to something called the ‘mother amulet’ that’s in the basement. The mother amulet wakes up about once every thousand years because around that time a several summers worth of bugs the size of him-” She gestured towards Kyle “-appear. You still following?” She paused, hoping that had made sense and sending lost glances at Fox and Kyle as if asking them to join and help at any point.
Kyle nodded along with what she was saying, glad that everything was trying to explain was being understood. “Yup, pretty much. You want some coffee?” The very notion seemed to scare the poor guy.
Rylie decided at that very moment that this was his favorite person in the room. Gee, I hope he’s not allergic.
Kyle braced for impact as Rylie let out an endearing “prrrrrrrrt” and twined between Charlie’s legs, giving some of those adorable head rubs normally designed only to knock Kyle down. This is so awkward.
Charlie stared at Brid for several seconds, then said slowly. "Yeah, I think I got it. Made no sense, but at least this isn't a meeting on how to solve world hunger, right?" He grinned at her. Knowing that he hadn't barged in on something important, and wasn't going to be attacked, made him feel a lot calmer. He looked down at the cat, and almost reached out to pet him, but thought it might be disrespectful to his rider."She explained it best," Fox mumbled, nodding at Brid. He took a few steps back, staring at the floor, arms crossed over his chest. Anxiety, confusion, embarrassment, sympathy, joy. He could feel every single one of those in the room. Is empathy a blessing or a curse?
Rylie jumped away from Charlie and hissed at her and Kit in reply. "I have a bit of cynophobia myself," Kyle admitted. "I've been using all my willpower to not run away screaming. Maybe it's best that you leave..." Kyle had never never taken the time to find out which dogs were male or female. He usually ran away screaming first. "Him? Her? Here? Out of danger? That might be best."
"We haven't the time," Kyle interrupted. "Blair is right." Laurel was nowhere to be seen. "We should get going. I should have expected that not all of the stones would be found. Let's go!" Rylie bounded toward the door to the basement and Cam stood up to follow, cheered by his bravery.
Charlie appeared out of nowhere, after being lost for like 20 minutes. He waved awkwardly at the others and came closer.Brid looked up as Kyle and Rylie whizzed away past her, the others following. “I guess it’s time to go,” she said absentmindedly to Fox, straightening and beginning to move after the group, her eyes practically glowing with all the new sights and sounds. She stopped to wait for him and Colby, suddenly realizing that she didn’t see the Charlie guy anywhere.
