(She's the surgeon's apprentice)But what is her TITLE.
Ember was shocked to find herself relieved at the elder's order. Reassured and reproved, all the same, she gave him a respectful nod, sliding the knife back into its place in her belt and hugging her wings in tight as she slipped past, out of the cabin.
Do not give this man undue credit, she scolded herself, the thought bringing the dignified tilt of her head back in slight. He is reasonable enough to recognize, but he is not the Professor. Let him prove himself worthy, or you'd find yourself groveling at his feet like this so-called "first mate."
She waited against the wall for the others to follow, refusing to acknowledge the comfort of being pressed in shadows.
Heavy footfalls sounded out along the deck boards as Bailey took his procession to the Captain’s cabin. A quick rap of his knuckles at her door, and soon her voice responded, allowing them entry.Jintao's stomach twisted in a tight knot, complete with the jarring pain as though a knife had been stabbed inside. The Captain's quarters was the last place he wanted this situation to be brought to. He was fine with it settling here and him slipping out like it never happened. And now, with the Captain involved, punishment was sure to follow.
The Captain, as much as he mentally down-graded her for her quick set of positions, would most likely find him at fault and punish him accordingly. For simple, she may knock him down in rank. For an example, like the Destruction tended to love, public lashings were sure to follow.
As Ember walked past, Jintao's gaze fell upon Tay. How could of he acted so quickly? He may have been correct about her, and as so, should it be revealed and Vhanya be in on it, this would surely result in his death. Keel-hauling, that's one thing the Destruction never did until after he had left, but he doubted that the Quicksilver would oppose it so much.
Jintao's grip loosened from his dagger, leaving the handle to warm itself. His right sleeve was no longer tucked away in his pocket, revealing to Cyrus that he was indeed, only one-handed. Does that even matter anymore? he tucked it back into his pocket, once again giving it the illusion that there was an arm inside. Should his punishment be anything besides a lowered rank, the forced removal of his coat would show where he was lacking. That, and his thin weight, he reminded himself.
"Yes, sir," Jintao nodded, ensuring his hat was positioned well enough to conceal himself from prying eyes. He went to the door, stopping to take one last look at Tay. His eyes were full of guilt- guilt he would have never felt if Tay had been anyone else. He left the room, giving Ember her space, though watching for the glimmer of knife or pistol. He squared his shoulders, awaiting Cyrus to lead the way.
Fear was forbidden to her, but no one could manage such without making habit of beating out the nature of it. Yes, fear was nature, but to Ember, second to it was the abuse of such weakness. Vhanya's presence demanded fear. Ember's presence knew nothing of it. Such made holding the front of respect beyond vital.Heavy footfalls sounded out along the deck boards as Bailey took his procession to the Captain’s cabin. A quick rap of his knuckles at her door, and soon her voice responded, allowing them entry.
Vhanya sat at her desk, an elbow propped on the wooden surface and a hand pressed to her brow. The greatcoat and hat were discarded, leaving her in a white wool blouse and her raven hair loosed from its plait.
She closed the logbook before her with a brisk snap of paper and settled back into the chair, gaze flicking from Cyrus to the three behind him. The yellow eyes darted back to Cyrus, and after his quick frown, some dark thing akin to understanding flashed across them. She bore a terrible resemblance to Alastar some days.
“You three. The wall.” Vhanya stabbed a long finger to the paneling, “and stop hiding behind your hat, Mr. Balík, you should try to look trustworthy, yes?” A brief glance, “Bailey, close the door.”
She looked back to the others, eyes glinting, brow arched, “now someone tell me what I’ve missed.”
(The sass is tangible.)"Perhaps, the esteemed first mate would like to explain what it was I found."

Jintao followed Cyrus as slowly as he could without being called out. Tay, despite still trembling from either the shock from what happened or new found anger, followed along. Though she did not speak, Jintao fought off the temptation to offer her a helping hand.Fear was forbidden to her, but no one could manage such without making habit of beating out the nature of it. She followed the Captain's gesture silently, keeping her movements tight and contained. It was the scathing attention of the higher ranks that unnerved her more than the threat of death or punishment. The Harpy despised an open spectacle. She cleared her throat softly.
"I summoned the first mate immediately as you requested Captain, and also escorted Lyra to his cabin as he inclined earlier. After that, I retired to my own quarters, but not long after, felt a sense of danger and came to investigate."
She broke off, feeling along the bottom of a canine with her tongue, which gave a slight parting of her lips. The Harpy glanced at Jintao.
"Perhaps, the esteemed first mate would like to explain what it was I found."

AHAHAHHJintao followed Cyrus as slowly as he could without being called out. Tay, despite still trembling from either the shock from what happened or new found anger, followed along. Though she did not speak, Jintao fought off the temptation to offer her a helping hand.
Fool, he studied the planks as they walked across them. The monster he once was had rosen so quickly inside him, but yet- his gentleness still wanted to show itself to Tay. A fool, that's all I am, and will always be.
They reached the Captain's cabin and with a quick order, they entered her quarters. Vhanya snapped at him for his hat, further making him feel like the fool he felt he was.
"Yes, Captain," Jintao's tone was stern- a lot sterner than he had meant it to be. He removed his hat and held it in the fold of his arm. He stood in front of the wall, careful to keep space between him and Ember.
He straightened himself to his full height. Wheither esteem mattered to Cyrus or not, even fake esteem made one appear more worthy than not. It was more of self-protection, something to have in such moments or else the ship's mockery would have their tales to share.
"Not much to have missed, Captain. Nothing but a misunderstanding that I'm sure you don't want to be bothered with." Jintao gave a slight bow of his head. "And with your first evening's sail, things concerning the below deck should not be serving as your distraction, Captain."
Jintao gave Ember a glance. A smile, at this time, would have been awkward to most, but in the means of defense for one who spent most of their sea life with the Destruction, it was more of a means to have better importance, and anyone opposing defeated. "There is no need, Ember, and no need for us to be here. It was your mistake, not mine. And for your trespass, you should be thankful for my self-control."
For a deadly second, all hope at composure vanished from the Harpy. Her teeth bared in unison with the fight to keep her jaw from dropping in shock, and her eyes blazed with fire hotter than all the fury of the underworld. Curses rose in her lungs and she snapped her mouth shut suddenly to prevent the jagged language from leaving her throat.Jintao followed Cyrus as slowly as he could without being called out. Jintao allowed a breath to raise his chest before it escaped. It had worked. His posture remained worthy, whereas the Quartermistress had lost herself. Why did such things work so well for him but yet he always hated himself for it? He had destroyed ships with such methods and Nahash had continously honored him for it, training him further in the ways of the sadistic ship. For a deadly second, all hope at composure vanished from the Harpy. So that's how you want to play.
This was pathetic. She would not accept defeat, but the pettiness of the argument dripped with childishness.
"Captain, I believe you stated when we arrived that you were to handle all confrontation, correct?"
Vhanya's pride was legendary. Turned with a vengeance on someone, it would kill to preserve itself, and Ember would ensure that vengeance fell on the first mate. If the Scorpion didn't strike him dead, Ember certainly would.

Tay wrapped a thin arm beneath her study ribs.
Eyes averted from every source of contact, she let her mind fester in the futility of existence. This all was maddening. Never could she be in a usual predicament.
Devils, Jintao, be honest.
She looked down and rested her head against lean, cold fingers.

Despose of that now, he swallowed. This was turning to between him and Ember than what happened between him and Tay. Yes, it was meant to preserve himself, but as the moments passed on, he wanted to punish himself for Tay. No, not in front of Ember or anyone else, but in a way that Tay would understand. He kept his silence, wishing he had more control over the situation than the control he kept over himself, and habitually slipped his hand back into his pocket, brushing the blade.
