Lupin's feet throbbed from her monotonous plodding. She peered at her feet, wondering if her shoes were worn through like they were in books.

Apparently, it was much harder to wear through a pair of good shoes than most stories enunciated, because her shoes looked fine. With a tired half-sigh, she turned another corner.

More Mythics, probably phoenixes or harpies, stood by the entrance to the town. (IS THIS OK?) One of them was tense, looking annoyed, while the other looked pretty oblivious.

They were talking in lower voices, hushed and not quite nervous. She decided not to yell "RABBITS!" at them, as that probably would not go well.

Please come do some poking, she wished, knowing very well that she was going to walk right past them. The sun, rising over the horizon, gave a fiery glow to the docks, masts, and buildings scattered across the seashore.

POKE AT ME PLEASE, she tried to convey with her eyeballs. The eyeball magic did not work, unfortunately.

She glanced up at the sun and stopped dead.

A milky white shape was visible behind a cloud. Terror pounded through her veins -- the moon was up. It was rare for the moon and sun to be visible together in the early morning... but it was currently happening, and she was officially doomed.

Oh no, no no no no no no no no, she pleaded with the clouds, begging them not to part.

But part they did, and the moon shone down on her viciously.

full disclosure i am aware that the changing happens when the sun sets but i was thinking lupins going to be different or something because it will be really fun to be RPing and then DEATH FROM THE SKY

She wasn't sure if Coal even noticed, energetically pacing his way through the alley, innocent and unaware of her sudden change of mood.
"Your mother, Phoenix," She corrected tensely. "Your mother. What even makes you so convinced we're related?"

“Woah, no need to get so tense,” said Coal. “Myrtle was her name. I mean, is her name. She is still alive. She told me she had a daughter named Ember, that she was forced to give up. It broke her heart. She saw you, a few times when you were young. She pointed you out to me a few times, but you were always going somewhere. Also, you have red wing tips and red eyes. But mostly black wings. On account of the harpy side. I don’t know anyone else who looks like that. It’s kind of hard to miss.”

"Forced to give up?"
Ember's voice grew venomous, the heat channeling through her blood fiercer than before, making her eyes glow brighter still.
"She... she was forced to give me up? And it broke her heart, yet she knew me. Knew where I was, and she never..."
Her breath grew quick with rage, her clenched hands opening and curling under the instinct of brandishing razor claws. Her glare burned into Coal for a long moment as she stood there, sucking in a few longer breaths to recollect her composure.
"Never came back for me." Her voice settled again, falling back into its emotionless, icy tone and she slowly flexed her smoking hands, working the tension out of her muscles.
"Now tell me why I should-"
She broke off suddenly, her body going rigid as her gaze snapped up to the burly woman standing at the corner of the building. The sense of danger swirled back into the outskirts of Ember's mind and she flicked a gloved hand toward Coal, signaling for him to stay quiet.

Tay slid shakily from the booth, fingers tight with suppressed blood.

She glanced around the mostly abandoned bar.

Jintao lead the way out of the bar and into the dark morning air. He tucked the dagger into his pocket as he didn’t have a sheath to put it in yet. It was the safest place he could hide it from view, and by it being in his pocket, he was still able to hold it.

"Jordan Tay," Jintao said after walking in tense silence for several minutes. He stopped and turned towards Tay. "Your hair was longer on your poster."

"Well, your guardians moved away and well..." Coal went silent. He sensed what Ember was worried about.
He stared at the woman paralyzed with fear, gaze fixed on the moon. A chill ran down his spine and her fear became his own.
