Her legs were cold. She dragged forward, knees loose. Knives slipped in her sleeves, and she bore them in a heated palm, then twisted herself around, gathering her mind.(It's perfectly fine Lacy, you did amazing)
(Ember is highly skilled both in a fight and with blades- I'm super excited to actually write some action for her and not just empty threats. She needs a chance to prove herself)
"Trust you?"
Her voice was low and gravely, rung clean of anger and instead, darkened with dread, threatening to expose the tightness in her lungs. She pressed her blade firmly back against his, making both weapons tremble from the tension. She kept her own well balanced, feeling for any shift in his pressure.
Lyra was safe behind her now, that grounding knowledge fought back the snowstorm of memories threatening her mind.
"As long as you threaten another innocent life fool-" she bit the last word with the effort not to let her voice crack "-then it will always be between you and me."
Another. She'd slipped. How could she be so stupid?
This wasn't the same human. She knew that. Nothing about the man before her said he'd taken "another" innocent life before. Truly, she knew nothing of this situation, but the awakened monster ravaging her thoughts now would see the end of her if she didn't at least try to keep blood from being spilled tonight.
Whatever dignity clung to her refusal at desperation wouldn't let her correct the words. So instead, she pressed him back further, more slowly, the heel of her wrist pressed firmly against his chest.
"I don't know you. Would never 'trust you.' But I don't want to end you."

Jintao kept his remark about Tay being 'innocent' to himself. He could turn Ember against her, but it wasn't what he wanted anymore. Tay's movement caught his eye. With the Quartermistress on her side, she could still be a threat, that is, if she could find her legs again. He moved to the side, blocking Tay's view of him with Ember's body. Her legs were cold. She dragged forward, knees loose. Knives slipped in her sleeves, and she bore them in a heated palm, then twisted herself around, gathering her mind.
Too much conversation.
Tay posed her aim, knives raised and stuck between each knuckle, steady within her sound hand. She waited, silent in submission to the Harpy's dominant lead, and hoping this ordeal would not turn to bargain.
Back down?Jintao kept his remark about Tay being 'innocent' to himself. He could turn Ember against her, but it wasn't what he wanted anymore. Tay's movement caught his eye. With the Quartermistress on her side, she could still be a threat, that is, if she could find her legs again. He moved to the side, blocking Tay's view of him with Ember's body.
" Always?" Jintao pressed his blade harder. He was stronger than her, but risking the integrity of his blade wouldn't be worth it for long. He stared into her soul, his past darkness rising up and threatening to eat her from the inside out.
Hold your tongue, he held back the Destruction from chewing inside. It was still in him. He wanted change, change that came with depression and led him back here. He hated himself for this. Nothing could ever changed him. He was nothing but the murderer that he always been, so why try and pretend? No! His conscience was now desperate. You're better than this! Do better! You can do better!
"Then back down," his calmness returned and shut the darkness off. His conscience held its breath for hope. He stepped back, his blade still gripping Ember's. "You back down, and I'll back down. Neither of us needs to get hurt here. Understood?"
The dagger's handle dug into Jintao's hot spots. He loosened his grip just enough to ease the pain, which was the only indicator of pain he allowed. Ember pushed him back, and he caught himself with a foot behind. Ember freed the blades. Jintao held his blade up at the exact time Ember held her's. His grip tightened once again and he blocked out the burning in his hand.Back down?
The thought was detestable to her.
Something shadowed the man's eyes, a monster as malevolent as the one burning behind her own. His stare threatened to pull it out.
She couldn't blink, and neither moved, plunging the cabin into a deadly silence. Her eyes flicked back and forth between his, blazing wrath from the dare hanging on his words.
I'd never back down.
She knew well that reckless defiance would be no ally here. Her adrenaline thirsted for a fight. Fear of the dark waves within made her recoil from it.
Ember twisted her blade sharply, hooking Jinato's with the handle and yanking it to an awkward angle in his grasp. In the same instant, she pushed him to the wall, untangling their weapons, and stepped back quickly with her own knife still raised, pointed toward him.
"You're awfully diplomatic all of a sudden. If you don't want anyone getting hurt, start talking."

"You want me to drop it so badly?"The dagger's handle dug into Jintao's hot spots. He loosened his grip just enough to ease the pain, which was the only indicator of pain he allowed. Ember pushed him back, and he caught himself with a foot behind. Ember freed the blades. Jintao held his blade up at the exact time Ember held her's. His grip tightened once again and he blocked out the burning in his hand.
Talk? Rat. Jintao had done too much talking. He was sick of talking. The darkness crept back. He couldn't rid himself of it. His conscience continued encouraging him, but he felt like it wasn't enough. Jaw tight, he ran his tongue along his teeth.
"My talk is useless," he nodded forward, eyes still locked onto Ember's. "Sometimes it's just best to drop a mistake than to encourage it."
Jintao stepped to the side, now holding his blade at arms length. "I'm willing to drop this. You want to keep this going, it'll only end in bloodshed. Let's not spoil the Captain's fine boards with it."
(Wow I love Ember here. I'm really seeing her morality shine through her cold exterior here)(It's perfectly fine Lacy, you did amazing)

"That's my business, not your's," his response was blunt. He wasn't going to be interrogated again. He knew how such things work aboard the Destruction and was prepared to deal with anything that came."You want me to drop it so badly?"
Her anger returned slowly, a gentle throbbing rolling in like the shifting tide.
"Enough games- I don't want to keep this going, I want to end it, and end it right. And I'll do so however necessary. Give me a good reason as to why you assaulted a crewmate."
Ember countered his position, keeping her blade trained toward him and adjusting to follow his movement, maintaining an unwavering stance of defensiveness.
