A few sure steps brought him back to the base of the stairway, above Ember. Her tone would not do. It would only bring her harm.Ember recoiled as Cyrus stopped, her wings arching with tension.
She growled inwardly, but no words of retort came to her mind. Not that she dared express them now anyway.
She stood for a long moment at the base of the steps, staring up at Cyrus with a challenging gaze.
"What of the first mate?"
Cyrus set an unsmiling eye onto the quartermistress, “yes, what of the first mate, Miss Ember? You most certainly are not expecting him to be exempt from my standards, of course?”
He drew a breath, carefully watching the girl’s face, “and I hardly chided you. This—“ his eyes flicked to her feathers, puffed defensively— “manner of yours is uncalled for. It won’t further you any. Especially amongst my crew. Is that clear?”
