The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Not to back up the thread...but I am catching up...this thread moves REALLY QUICK!   I had a question about giving garlic to prevent worms...do your eggs not have a bad flavor?

I was wondering the same thing, flavor of the eggs. I like the idea of making the chickens some oatmeal and adding either Garlic or Ginger, since those seem to be some of the natural wormers people have been discussing.

there is an area of the forum just for such things

Maybe BDM would post them on her blog then we could find them faster.

GG - no - allowing your chickens to eat garlic or other strong herbs will not make the eggs taste funny. It's a very common misnomer.

well that is perfectly suited then

. Still where would it go? It would need to be separate from the thread otherwise it will all get lost in pages and pages of posts.

Stony - I think it would be a great idea if those who have good "recipes" like this start a thread. We can post regular reminders on this thread so new folks with their own chicken care recipes to share can add to the collection. How about it? Who can start and manage the natural remedy recipe thread?

Interesting question, since feeding my dogs garlic they smell like they may have come out of an Italian restaurant . The purpose of the garlic is so that it gets into every part of their body and the fleas lice and mites won't want to feed on the dogs/chickens etc. so maybe there would be some taste difference. Might have to put some marinara sauce over those eggs, [sorry i couldn't resist]

GOOD IDEA!

Another good thing to use if you are into herbal, Lavender, patchouli, eucalyptus, white pine, and peppermint essential oils to name a few, if a couple drops placed on the skin will also repel fleas and mosquitos and kill eggs. I have been using oils for years on my dogs and have never ( in the last 4 ) years had fleas or ticks.

Very good information!! Would you be interested in starting up a new thread for the sharing of this kind of information? We can keep linking back to it from here to remind folks.

A thread like that would be amazing!!!! I am young and very new to chickens!!! in fact I had never even touched a live chicken until I got my first ones back in May!!!! so I have A LOT!!!!! to learn.

Are there any oils known that should not be given to chickens but may be something used on humans or other pets?
