The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Not sure if anyone saw this link before.. but i needed these set of pictures that Speckled Hen posted to see what a fertilized yolk looked like. The first photo is NOT fertilized but the next two are! For those of us like me who have old eyes,, this is a bit clearer to see...

Yes these pictures are very clear! I'd like to take my own. However, I can't remember the last time I had an infertile egg... So someone will have to take the infertile shot. How about you Melabella? Or Leah's Mom?

Can anyone tell me what to look for in a fertile egg when candling? I know there's supposed to be some kind of dark spot but all we can see is the air pocket. We got a fancy ovascope so we can see the shadows inside really well but we're not sure exactly what to look for.
You can not see if an egg is fertile by candling unless it's been developing for a couple days or more.

It would have saved me a lot of infertile eggs with my BBS Ameraucanas.

I'll be doing it for breakfast tomorrow!! :D

We've been getting lots of eggs lately (well unless they freeze :/) Our RSLs have started to lay. Over a dozen a day.

Do you have an egg sicky in it? I am awful I do not remember every thing that is in there
What each stage looks like?
What a developing fetus looks like etc?
Before and after pics?
How about pullet size eggs as they progressively get bigger? We have tons of new people who have brand new laying pullets and it might be a great project for someone to do.

I'll be setting our first group of hatching eggs in the 'bator tomorrow at noon!

I have my $2 dozen of local, hatchery-grade P/RIR, Black Sex Link & Red Sex Link, and a friend sent me 12 Silkie hatching eggs which (sort of) got here today just before noon. Four were broken and only 2 have what seems to be a good air cell. Another looks like the air cell is slightly damaged and a few more have detatched and/or scrambled air cells. They must have had a really bumpy ride with USPS.

I am putting in all the unbroken eggs to give them a chance and I'll cull the non-growers on day 7.

I have the incubator (yes - my cheap-o) in the tiny closet under the stairs with a space heater (with a thermostat) set on 70 to make the ambient room temperature in there as steady as possible. The 'bator seems to be holding between 99 - 101 with rare spikes to 102 that apparently don't last long at all. Usually it's 99 or 100 when I check on it. Since the digital thermometer I'm using only shows full degrees (F) I'm going to say that it's holding right around 99.5 - yay! Keeping my fingers crossed it stays steady for the next 22-ish days!!

Hey Turtle--Love your avatar BTW!-I ferment my feed in the basement next to my furnace. There really is no smell at all when you have the bucket covered; and even when you open it it smells kind of like sourdough starter...not at all unpleasant!
If you can have an area at 60 degrees or so that should be fine, a little warmer is even better!
All you have to say is, "but Honey, it's for the little chickens!" I sure wish we only had cold for a few months...jealous!
Good luck! TerriO--the one with TWO R's!
