The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I know a backhoe sounds like a great idea, but they do a lot of damage tearing up the earth and compacting it in places where you don't want the compaction (unless of course that's what you do want). Now a chipper

that would make your garden beds much more easily @Lacy Blues The greater the surface area, the easier it would be for microbes etc., to break it down. If you had plenty of chicken litter and a few good tarps or black plastic to throw over the top and you soaked it well before hand - or built it in the rainier time, and maybe added some whey or other good source of healthy bacteria / yeasts/ microbes, that would all help. I think we've had a maximum of 10 straight days without rain this whole year, what we need is dry right now

I can't imagine what a life without mold, damp clothes and mildew might be like.

@Leahs Mom yes, hugelkultures are generally built about 4 - 5 foot high, so you could make some mini hills :) Typically they are put on contours to slow water down, stabilize, add vertical space, create micro environments and maybe as a long term goal, establish terraces. They would make some mighty fine raised beds. Typically also they utilize tree trunks and pruned branches - are there many trees to cut down on the plains of Indiana?

should be good to go then! HK seems a great way to put trunks and limbs to good use. If you've got no contours then you could use them as wind breaks while creating micro environments for other species / crops. So much potential . . .

SURVEY.... Need advice!

What do you all think is a reasonable pay for someone taking care of your chickens while you're gone?

Specifically, this is an adult. He will have to drive over 2x a day. Morning: Put out feed and be sure water is fresh. Evening: Be sure everyone is in and doors closed. Gather eggs. Put feed out if needed.

Would you pay by the day?
Would you pay by the "job" (as in a flat price for a week or weekend?)
HOW MUCH????

I think $20 a day is reasonable. I have paid $40 a day for someone--an older woman-- to stay at my house and sleep over. Expensive but great peace of mind. I have a number of dogs and cats as well as turkeys. I want someone who isn't going to get hysterical if they find a snake in the coop. Rare--but it happens.
