The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I put it on some gauze then apply tape sorry , and yeah it does

but you need to have it made up in advance, s takes 3-5 days depending on how string you want it.

Works great on dogs and cats ears, human ear and tooth aches, and sinus issues applied externally that we've found so far
thats really interesting. I've never heard of garlic externally - except crushed garlic on a bad scrape (leg went through a bad board in a manure soaked barn floor). stung like the dickens, but no infection!

infused into oil it doesn't sting as bad, on a tooth ache works as good or better than say the Ambsol, we use it for ear and tooth aches as well as ear mites and infections if the dogs or cats get them, and as I suffer from sinus infections frequently if get a cold and allergy attack tried it along cheek bone externally and cleared it up in a couple of days. I carry that in a bottle with me if we our out hiking too and add a flask of cayenne pepper tea during the winter in case we get stranded or something

PS I infuse it into olive oil as it's got better stability and lasts longer, just keep it outta direct sunlight or you can store it in the fridge

sorry if there's typos to late to be drinking more coffee lol

That's really great info! I wondered about using it(garlic) for external medicine, but whenever I type in 'garlic' and 'chicken' anywhere near each other, the search always comes up with recipes lol :p

As for the NuStock, would it still harden inside the body, or would the body start to reject the foreign object and regrow around it, eventually pushing it out, much like a splinter?

That is what I am wondering, whether it will harden inside - this is a deeper and larger puncture wound than I have ever seen. I poured the more liquidy part of the nustock in the wound, and that has too much pine tar oil to harden, but I was worried about the paste part making a cement cap on the wound.

However, I spent about an hour with the hen this morning and she was working hard on grooming. She was kind of nibbling on the edges of the nustock that had hardened. Her droppings are green and normal, but the white urate cap is yellow - which I think is from the sulphur she is ingesting. It is safe to ingest.

What natural first aide products do you guys recommend? I am new to chickens. Thanks!
Begiiner girl, there are three products I would not be without:
Molly's herbal wormer (google it!)
Nu stock
Blue Kote. Blue kote is an antiseptic spray with genitian violet, and it turns abrasions, minor injuries, etc purple. That keeps other chickens from pecking at the red spot, which can quickly lead to cannibilism .

I keep garlic, brewers yeast, ACV on hand too.

As natural wormers I use garlic clove/powder (I have my own mortar and pestle so I grind up my own fresh garlic powder), onions, and pumpkin seeds. For external parasites I use lemon, lime, or orange juice, and garlic powder. I recommend garlic powder as an all natural medicine for 3 reasons. 1st, it's cheap and easy to get. 2nd, because garlic has so many sulfur varieties and a lot of sulfur parasites die because of it and have a difficult if not impossible to adapt to it; sulfur kills parasites and when used properly is safe. I just give my birds a bowl full of garlic powder or put out cloves of onions or garlic and what they eat they eat and what they leave I pick up and use next time. 3rd, it contains vitamin C which can help boost a birds immune system to help fight off infections. Sulfur also used to be used as medicine to help treat dieases and other illnesses.

I have nu-stock, blue kote, and vetRX poultry meds... And I keep herbs like rosemary, dill, nettles, and wormwood handy, especially in summer when they're fresh...

I've never used garlic powder, I always just fed fresh cloves, but I'm willing to try the powder :)

Oh and I like to keep an electrolyte/probiotics powder handy in case I have a sick chick, but I started fermenting their feed, so I'm almost willing to toss it... But not yet ;)

Thanks everyone for your lists. My pullets seem very healthy but want to be prepared. They are so soft and shiny. Didn't know chickens would be so lovely to touch.

Shortgrass, how are the fresh herbs used? Are they for mites?

Taking a chicken first aide class next week so am excited to learn more!

I keep many of the same herbs and aides as others, but I always have oregano oil handy. It's pricey, but effective, IME. I don't use it just for the chickens, I use it myself.

In the chicken box, I keep VetRX, Vetricyn, BluKote, packet each of vitamins & electrolyte, and Epsom salts. I ferment their feed, so I don't stock probiotics for them.

In my pantry, I always have garlic (fresh), cayenne, turmeric, ginger (fresh), ACV, etc. I've been trying to grow comfrey for them, as fodder and as a herb, but they rats and skunks keep killing them at night.
