The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This is my pair of Legbars hatched before Christmas...Female on top, male on bottom...Almost two weeks old.

Just lovely! May I ask where you got the eggs from and will you be selling hatching eggs in the future?

Couldn't eliminate the pic. sorry.

Got the eggs off eBay. They came from TheFancyChick (.com) in Ohio. She has her own website. She also sells chicks and is much more affordable than Greenfire! I have a dozen golden cuckoo marans in the bator from her right now.

Quote: This is my very first time hatching shipped eggs. coming on here i never knew there was such a thing. I am learning pretty quickly about hatching shipping eggs. I don't think that is the whole issue. I think it is my bator. It is pretty old. I am looking into a new one. When I sell my next bunch of birds atthe fair, June..I am going to buy a new one.

Quote: I have not assisted. I just checked the eggs in the bator. All are still alive except the blue egg. I am not positive about the blue egg so I left it in. I have peeping from two more of the hrir. No exterior pip, just one additional interior. I think my temps are just to low. It is a steady 99.5. I raise it up to 100 before opening, and wrap the egg I examined in a warm towel. I had one single large tummy, so I think my humidity was a bit to high, but not by much, because it was only one. I dry hatched until lock down. I think next time I am going to extend my time an additional day before I do lock down. Out of all of my eggs i set, they all hatched but three. I did egg topsys and I think they must have died right around lock down. So I have 7 chicks running around in the brooder and one in the incubator. All of mine are done..I have 5 left of the shipped eggs. 4 still viable and active.

I thought the males had the white spot on the head...that would make it the male on top, right?
Females have chipmunk stripes no spot (my female at top of pic) Males have spot on head (male below her at bottom of pic). You can also see the barring on his wing feathers.
