The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

WOW, you all were chatty today. About the broody topic, I had a hatchery BR go broody at 6 months old. She did great with the 2 eggs she hatched until she and one chick were taken by a hawk(on 2 separate days). I am expecting one of my BO to go broody next. I had one of my Production Reds try but I broke her real quick(she is my meanest bird and don't want her raising chicks). And of course once the Silkies are up and running they will be broody machines(I hope)

Mumsy..
That is so exciting..Fertile and ready for hatching. Perhaps we can do a hatch a long. Fire up that bator!
Hah! I'm on it! Have that thing full of everything but eggs on it's two day test run. The probe is registering 99 degrees inside the homemade water weasel and the other four thermometers are holding steady at between 99.5 and 100 degrees. Humidity is 35 % with just normal winter inside air. So far all systems say go! Four more eggs in the next two days will give me fifteen. I want seven or six females from this hatch. My first eggs raised by FF fed flock, all natural, and free ranged. This is going to be interesting!

oops double post

Sebbies!!!! Please get Sebbies so I can live through you. my DH still will not let me have a sebbie or an LGD

I want them so bad! I've been researching the last year, but I think I may have to go another season before I get some. I really need trees on the property for coverage and hiding. And, since I want good Sebbies I'll have to get them after we build the deck, because that's what savings is going to this year.

my duck experience at the moment is limited to 2 breeds. Pekins and Runners. Both get along with chickens fine. Sumatra hens and roosters are in and out of the duck pen all day long. My Runners for the most part aren't bossy. The Pekin girls can be. I've watched them chase away a rooster giving a hen a hard time. My Pekin girls don't put up with anyone's nonsense. And my Pekins lay a decent amount of eggs. They are pretty vocal. But I like that

. The Runners are taller than chickens but don't weigh a lot. But like I said they get along with my chickens just fine.

I know others have other breeds. Miss Lydia and Aoxa have ducks as well as others. Lets see what they say.

Geese are on our "to get' list.
I have call ducks, Khaki Campbells and one Muscovy.

I like them all in different ways, but I do like my muscovy best. They aren't for everyone though (in appearance).
Question for aoxa.....and BDM

Did you enter a picture for the BYC calendar? If you did,, I can't imagine why there isn't one of yours in it!

mb
I did, and I made it into the finals. However, I entered photos that were vertical, and they use horizontal for the calendar. Only one month was used as vertical images.. Gigi didn't make it :p

I love my Muscovys..they are so sweet and filled with expression. They talk and talk with out saying a word..you can almost hear them through body language. My Drake loves baby chicks. I wish I could give him some, but he is so protective, when someone comes close to his charges he will run the chicks over in his excitement to protect. I will gate the babys up in a small fence and he talks to them through the fence and trys to warm them. Show what to eat. Poor chicks taught to eat stuff a normal chick would not eat...lol.. He is not as good with baby ducks, but, the hens beat him up if he gets to close when they are young.
