The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

These are just guesses and it all depends on the breed. If these are americauna they look like males.
front is pullet back is roo? I can't see the back one...I would say both pullets unless back one had red wattles.

Ok I am trying to play guess the sex......These are Sally8's pics but I'm curious if I guessed right? Could the OTs help? Thank you :)
They are BCMs and BR of course lol

Delisha I have a question. We had a discussion a few pages back that BRs can be sexed by feather color. The lighter markings are male and the darker feathered ones are female.

The 1st BR I guessed as roo since its lighter feathered than the pullet in the 2nd pic. Did you say pullet because it has the darker feathers in the saddle area & tail? It seems in those areas it is darker. After looking again I notice there is barely a comb & no wattles. Do you use this as well when deciding sex?

And for the BCMs I just went by comb & wattles. I forget how old Sally8 said they were but If I had to guess I would say 8-10 weeks old?

Thanks for your patience. I have never had such young chicks but I still like to guess what the sexes are from the information you have shared prior. :)

Some pictures of the progress from the week! We are expecting so much rain :/ It's been raining all week, but they've kept at it. Today it was down pouring, so they couldn't work outside. They did the interior stuff today instead. :)
I LOVE a red barn!! It's really coming together now :) I want to paint my coop red!

I hope everyone has a nice weekend. I'm so thankful for a long weekend and for the people who served!

Today dd and I are planting the garden, finally!! And I'm trying out making yogurt for the first time. I'm kinda excited :) I hope it turns out, makes me nervous to possibly waste all that milk lol. But if it don't turn out like I want it I'm sure the chickens would be glad to help me out with it haha

I started putting garlic powder in their food, and they don't seem to mind it. I'm a bit confused, though. I read not that garlic is a good all natural way to keep parasites off, but then I also read to keep them away from garlic. That letting them eat garlic makes the eggs taste like garlic.

They aren't ready to lay yet and won't be for a few months. They're also not even outside yet, but I added garlic powder to their food. Also, what is LAb? I saw that someone said their was a video for it, but didn't see the link.
Thanks

So glad I didn't give up on them.
I have 5 hatched, at least 3 more piping.
I haven't opened the bator since I had a low humidity problem toward the end of hatch last time after getting anxious and opening to take chicks out.
My last few were too dry and died.
So... I'm determine to leave these chicks until this evening...
YES... it's killing me. LOL
Pics tomorrow... maybe I can tell sex by then.

I was really hoping for you!

My guys get garlic regularly and they are laying & I've never tasted or had complaints that the eggs taste like garlic.
(I also give them cayenne pepper & that the eggs don't taste like that either thank goodness

That was me speaking about LAB- sorry the link didn't work- I will try again

Others told me about it. They use it in their DL & their gardens to help give it nutrients. Its also suppose to work for veggie plants who have disease

I have been writing useful information down as I was worried it would be gone. I appreciate it also. Thanks for your hard work with everything else going on in your life.

Putting garlic in your chicken feed will not make your eggs taste like garlic. That's an old wives tale.

I'm sure someone will repost the missing link for the LAB soon - it's basically good bacteria - like the kind found in yogurt. It can be used for many things including to deodorize coop bedding.

I have also heard that too much fish meal can make the eggs a funky flavour. Garlic though? Never heard that :)
