there where feathers all over the yard i have pics i'll post later
what can i do to get back at them?

Get back at them? Why not go over with the dead chicken , ask for reimbursement, and ask that they contain their dog. If their attitude is not favorable, I would then notify animal control.

Please do not try to "get back" at them. Then they will feel the need to "get back" at you, you will feel the same, and so it will go. Sourland has offered good advice. Follow it.

what is going on with neighbours dogs and killing hens

this is getting real silly now

people need to be aware this si a possability and protect their chicken at all times

if it was me after reading it happeneing to a few people i would be vigilent myself

before you decide to get back at them you need to determin whos fault it is as dogs are like that in nature after all they are decendants of wild dogs and wolves

so you need to decide was the dog acting on instinct, did the neighbour let him loose and not control him or did you leave a door or fence open and dog got in

personally and i may sound harsh but its the chicken owners fault everytime as its up to them to protect their flock no matter how they do it

Every time? Are you serious???? I do NOT agree. My sole purpose in getting chickens was to free range them. If they have to stay penned and eat commercial feed only, I might as well buy those anemic grocery store eggs because that's all I'd have.

There is a law in almost every county in the U.S. (even when folks don't know there is or think there is not), no matter how rural, that says a dog off the owner's property MUST be under the control of that owner, i.e., on a leash.

I have a perimeter fence around 2 of my over 5 acres and my coops with attached pens are inside that perimeter. The flocks free range within that perimeter on a regular basis. A dog once climbed the fence and tore it off the tree it was nailed to. If I have to leave my driveway gate open for a delivery, every illegally roaming dog seems to have "gate radar". NO, it is not my fault if a dog comes into the perimeter and manages to kill my chickens after all I've done to protect them.

It is also not my fault if I shoot and kill the dog who breeches that perimeter and goes after my flock, which I will do, without a moment of regret. And I love dogs, but my birds are on their own property and the dog is not. See my sig line.

X2. We can only do what we can to protect our flocks. It is the responsibility of the dog owners' to keep their dogs properly under control.

OP take the dead bird over to the owner's and explain the situation. They are responsible for damages caused by their dog roaming at large. If they will not make good on the damage, you can call your local dog warden and file a complaint. The dog warden will take it from there.

The only change I would make on this advice would be I wouldn't ASK that they contain their dog. I'd insist on it, with the addition of "or lose it". And send along a copy of the local ordinance about roaming dogs, because there almost always is one.

I have neighbors that own wolves...not close by, about a mile away as the crow flies. They don't feed their animals like they should and release them at night to hunt. One Christmas Eve I lost all my 6 hens when they broke into my coop. If I had been quicker getting outside with my weapon the neighbor's pets would be dead. I have since improved my coop, gotten new chicks, and make sure they are locked up every night. (I don't live in a town, I live in the middle of nowhere and can't see or hear my nearest neighbor). Coyotes is another reason to lock up my flock at night.
