My daughter got an interesting phone call yesterday. She is 19 and about two months ago someone stole her cell phone. She reported it to Verizon and paid $100 to replace it.

Lo and behold some lady from North Carolina (we live in Iowa) called yesterday asking her to take the ban off that phone. She had purchased it on e-bay and SURPRISE it doesn't work.

My daughter called me for advice as the lady had taken a little attitude with her. I told her that it was stolen property and she needed to report it and file a disput with paypal. There is no way that this lady should benifit from my daughters loss.

My daughter also talked to Verizon and they said they wouldn't be able to remove the lock on it either.

Whoever was dumb enough to sell it on e-bay didn't even bother to remove the thing my daughter had placed on there that said if this phone is found please call ---

I hope they can track down the lil coward!!! At least ruin his paypal account or something.

the nerve of some people!

not only is it a crime to steal it and sell it, the lady who has it now is in RECEIPT OF STOLEN GOODS. regardless if she meant it or not, she has stolen property. this makes her punishable also.

I was just thinking the same thing. Ebay/paypal can track the phone right back to the seller but the buyer will have to do it. As for the person calling and getting an attitude about turning the phone on - my responce couldn't be printed here.

Yep, especially since she really wants use of it knowing it is most likely stolen. If she had realized and called up to let everyone know to help track the stealer down, then that is a different story....

My sister lost her phone and reported it stolen to verizon also. They put a lock on the lost phone and she got a new one. A few months later she found the phone- it was lost in the house! Duh!

Anyway, my Verizon cell was on the fritz so we called verizon to ask them to unlock the phone. They said they could/would not as that phone was now theirs (since they had given her a new one-she had insurance) nd they would send a box to my sister to send it back to them.

ETA -How did she get your daughter's number?

I guess I could have worded it better - my daughter told the purchaser that she (the purchaser) needed to file the report. It was only her phone that got stolen - not her purse. When the lady didn't know it was stolen - it would have been one thing to ask for her to turn it back on, but to persist after she knew it was stolen makes me have NO sympathy for her.

It made me think though about how much of the stuff on E-bay might be stolen items. Especially the electronics.

Lots, I saw a show...possibly Dateline??? on where so many steal things like baby formulas, diapers, electronics, toothbrushes, and all sorts of things and ebay was the #1 place they like to sell these stolen goods. I do alot of shopping on ebay and I have since wondered if anything I have recieved has been stolen.....
