The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

You might want to NOT kill the snakes..... Some of the good snakes will kill the bad snakes. We don't kill snakes here..... well unless they could KILL us or are killing chickens. Son ran over a rattler in the drive way last year and this year he killed a copperhead at his foot with a chainsaw.... but other snakes are rehomed away from the chickens. The key to keeping snakes down is keeping the mice and rabbits and squirrels down. Snakes will not be where they don't have food.

Very sorry about your cat and silkies. Hope you can get the snake problem resolved.

Thank you and me too. I walked up on a huge king snake about a week ago and figured I wouldn't have any other snakes in the yard with that one around but apparently thats not the case. Since we kill any snake we see and that one got away it may have left the yard. My grandson was mowing the yard and moved a cooler out of the way and a whole bunch of baby copperheads scattered. He managed to kill 3 of them but the rest are roaming the yard tasting my chickens. I thought thats what happened to my cat but the vet determined it was a stroke. I have snake traps set but they won't hold baby snakes.

That sounds like overload! I don't think I could manage much else with all of that going on...
Good Luck!

I am just trying to get some sizzles for my flock. Hopefully someday.

I purchased 21 BBS Am eggs from Rbaker0345 and I candled to find that 15 of them are veining under broodies. Not bad at all for shipped eggs. Now I just need some of their lavenders. :D

It's rare that I see a snake that is non venomous. If it's big enough to swallow an egg it's a threat. I have to sell most of the eggs to buy feed and other essentials for my flock so an egg theif can't be here. Also they can eat any chicks that may be with mommas outside. I have snake traps baited with eggs for those that eat them. The cat I had was my main mouse control. I keep poison out also for those living under ground. She didn't weigh 8 pounds living on cat food alone. lol Now we have a kitten that can only kill bugs so we have to put more poison out for the mice. I wish I knew how to not have mice at all but they have 24/7 access to the feeders. Perfect for mice. They burrow underground under the pens.

We have cotton mouth and copper heads and we also have 4 acres of woods behind our house. We have rattlers in this area but I have yet to see any and hope I never do. Then there are the coons, possums, skunks that wander in sometimes. A coon broke into a pen and tried to steal an egg from under a broody hen. The coon got away but damaged the egg so the chick died anyway but he didn't leave with it. I'm surprised he didn't go after the chickens. We caught him a few days later in a live trap. We had a family of possums that would visit at night but we got rid of those also. I once lost several guinea keets to possums and also a partridge and quail.

I guess I need to take this to the chat thread. Sorry.

Sorry for the confusion. There where many things distracting me when I posted it and I put the wrong time on it. To make a long story short. My cat had a stroke and was in the hospital. I had my 3 grandsons distracting me beyond sanity and confusion. Today we went and got her body to bury her here where she spent her entire life of 6 short years. then found a silkie dead. I also have many copperhead very young snakes biting my chickens. I've lost 2 so far.
