"Welcome to the show. Step right up and watch (Insert laugh) as the newbie attempts to build a coop and run."

We started the build this weekend and I think we made good progress. My thanks to my son for helping out so much.

This design started as a simple thing, but as with all projects, it suffered from scope creep. The run is now 5 feet by 12 feet, with a separate coop, which will be roughly 5 feet by 5 feet, or so. The underside of the coop was going to be a covered area in the run, but now the whole run will be covered. The coop will butt up to the run with the pophole having an out into the run.

Below is a picture of this weekends progress. The foundation is 2 X 6 hardwood and the walls are 2 X 3 ripped from the 2 X 6. The wood is recycled from an old building that I helped a friend tear apart. After it is all built, it will be disassembled, painted, moved, and rebuilt. It is very heavy.

Welcome to "Coop Du Jour".

Great question. We are in a very wet season right now in Central Kentucky. I don't want the wood getting wet before I have a chance to paint everything.. Assembling it in the garage first allows me to make sure that everything fits together before I get it outside and discover its wrong.

Also, I am only tearing down the wall panels, not down to the studs. My son and I will carrying out the wall panels and have it re-assembled in about 2 hours.

I'm building mine in the garage too, it's great. All of the tools are right there and when I'm done, I just turn off the lights and go in the house. Mine is smaller though (4X5) and moving it shouldn't be too bad.
