The Next Depression?

Quote:
If the government could have done anything to stop the first depression they would have. They are desperately trying to stop a second one. This is obvious by all of the conserve energy propaganda, home loan help and free money that is going to be handed out this spring. I think our government will do all they know to do to TRY and stop a depression from happening, but I think it is naive to have complete confidence that they CAN stop it.

I talked with a man who lived through the first depression about this last night. He said he sees it coming, very soon. He said alot of the things we are seeing happen are the same things that happened before the last depression. We are hearing the same things coming from the government, such as our economy is just experiencing a dip, its a trend, it will pull out. He also mentioned a conservation movement before the last depression. He says other buzz words were used, but the giest was the same. Do some research. Its pretty compelling stuff.

I am full of hope that our economy will recover, but I think people should be prepared if it doesn't.

Part of the commitment we would be making would be NOT to work for those three days, unless you could get there by foot, or alternate transportation. My dh drives for a living too. We would just make the sacrifice. Any protest lacks conviction without a sacrifice being made. The fact that the majority of businesses would shut down and product would not be moved is the big attention getter, not the lack of revenue from fuel sales.

Would be nice to Boycott the gas station but when you HAVE to buy gas to deliver a big newspaper route everyday or LOSE your Job dont have much of choice then do ya?

I can see me now walking 120 miles carrying 500 newspapers on my back...NOT!

I know how you feel. My mom is quitting and going to her old job 2 hours away from here. There is no place around here that is walking distance. everyone takes off at her work so she is the only one busting her butt while others are off doing whatever

Gritsar, I wasn't being sarcastic to you--when I click "post reply" avatars and so forth don't show up.

Hmm. PC, could you point me to a reference that explains how fuel ethanol goes bad, or why it would have a short shelf life? Cause the stuff we have in the lab, which is 100% absolute EtOH, is marked with a 2012 expiration date. Also, could you point me to a reference about why modern diesel is less efficient than the old technology? Because literally every single thing I have read and every driver and engineer I've spoken to, say the exact opposite. So I'm interested to hear the counterargument in detail.

All water-soluble fuels that have to be manufactured (by plants, by humans, etc.) and fractionally distilled cost more in energy to refine than you will get out of them by combustion. Whereas fossil fuels that come out of a hole in the ground and are simple to distill use less energy in their refining process. That's just basic physics. However, someday all those fossil fuels are going to run out. Many economists think that right now, we are in a stage where fossil fuels will never get any cheaper, just more expensive, because extracting them and shipping them is just going to get more and more difficult.

Considering that we do not currently have any kind of good relationships with the oil-producing foreign governments (the House of Saud, Hugo Chavez, Putin/Medvedev), and considering Chinese and Indian economies guzzling oil, I can't see the price of oil ever coming down for the next several decades. We had better get our act together and do something.

I was wondering are rasing milk goats expensive? What do you feed them? I was telling my husband about this site and about people going to make their gardens larger, get more chickens, and raise milk goats. Is it hard to milk a goat??? I'm from the country, but don't know a thing about milk goats. What are the difference between a milk goat and the goats they raise for FFA and 4H???? We too are going to enlarge our garden. I've got to learn how to can too, I do know how to blanch veggies and put them in the freezer. I guess canning is better.

I don't have complete confidence in anything, especially our government.

In 1931 the Federal Reserve Bank did not exist nor did the international
exchange markets, FDIC, or world bank. If the US economy fell into a true
depression the world would follow. I just don't see it.

I've known many people who lived through the first depression. If I had a dime
for every time I heard "it was coming again" I'd be a rich man.

I'm totally baffled by the conservation rhetoric. I see people talking but I see
very few things being done. Also as someone who is in the electrical business
I can see through it. THE MAIN REASON THE GOVERNMENT WANT CONSERVATION
IS BECAUSE THE ELECTRICAL GRID IS MAXED OUT, not because we can't produce
the power needed.

This is too vast a subject to discuss on a chicken forum and is getting away
from the original post.

If you choose to be afraid of the the future than that is your business. Personally
I like to look to the future with optimism.

I am not an economics major but it is a bad sign that the feds are having to bail out established financial institutions. I think everyone can agree on a few things:

1. Gas so high causes a domino effect. It makes everything trucked or flown in go up. Family vacations down, tourism industry down.

2. Groceries are ridiculously high.

3. People are losing their homes in record numbers.

4. Millions cannot afford health care.

5. The war is costing lives and millions of dollars.

6. Education is not a high priority of this nation as evidenced by teachers salaries and drop out rates.

7. The U.S. is far down on the list of world manufacturing.

My vet tells me people are giving up their pets in record numbers to shelters and vet's offices, cannot afford any longer. Thre next administration has some very big issues to correct and I pray that whomever is in office will be able to help the country. It amazes me the number of people that never watch the national news or read the newspaper. Many are clueless. Best thing everyone can do is stay informed and be as careful as possible with your finances. Thre issues at hand will not be resolved quickly.

People are walking away from their homes in record numbers! My sister in Northern Ind. has 3 abandoned houses on her street. Even though the supermarkets are still trying to run deals here in Maine (of leader items), the prices of groceries is sky high! Truckers are giving up left and right. They can't make a profit. There are no jobs. Our food pantries can't keep up, they're nearly empty. I hope I can raise enough fresh vegetables to donate some this summer!
