Question to you gardeners...do you wait to pick your tomatoes once they are fully ripe or do you pick them a bit before and let them finish ripening on the counter?

I read something about picking them a little before they are completely ripe to avoid damage from bugs or splitting. But wondered what you all do.

I do both. Right now there is one on the window sill that I saw splitting yesterday - tonight it will reside in our salads.

I do both. I think splitting is caused by too much water being taken in, like a heavy rain.

Splitting happens because of late watering i.e. rain at the wrong time. I wait until they are fully developed and have max sugar content. I don't care if they are ugly.
 
I pick mine before they are fully ripe I ripen them out on the picnic table . Yesterday a doe and two fawns came and got in my garden . They cleaned out the cucumber bed . They stayed for about 15 mins. . The garden is only 35 feet from the window so it was a front row seat for us . I mowed the leaves on high setting so they could get them . How cute they were .
