The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

LOL, I thought you meant your DH too (scary when you start to think like sour). Spuds needs a friend!

I thought Princess was your playmate?

No playmates for hubby...I'm enough for him

Good morning folks :frow

sunflour it was interesting to read your thoughts on virilisation in hens.  We lost KiKi when she was just over one year old but for a couple of months prior to her passing, she was so very noisy and also intent on working her way up the ladder.  She had also taken to attempting to crow in the mornings.  I do not know why she passed away; she was fine the day before, roosting with the flock overnight and I found her on the coop floor the next morning.  It could be a coincidence but I have often wondered if her increased vocalisation could have been the sign of something else going on.

Aaaw DMC Spud is too cute and such lovely pictures!

Hey Blooie I am sorry to hear that you are unwell but pleased it is not your heart.  I am myself recovering from an angiogram following chest pains and the discovery that I have coronary artery disease.  Luckily the 50% narrowing of one artery was not the cause of the chest pain [that was probably stress].  While the week in hospital etc was not much fun, it is good to now know that I have CAD and can make lifestyle changes etc to manage it.

I hear ya with regards the no tolerance being sick.  This last week of not being able to lift anything including cats and chickens, clean the coop, vacuum, peg out washing etc has been the hardest week of my life .. walking around with blinkers on so I can not see what needs doing ;) However, the risk of opening up the healing femoral artery is a good incentive to behave .. that plus hubby watching me like a hawk and frequently saying “what are you doing” :old

Wow .. did we have a doozy of a storm roll over last night .. we got woken at 02:30AM by the loudest, window rattling thunder, the light show was incredible and half an inch of rain was dropped.

At the risk of a :smack  todays predicted maximum is 89.5F with an 80% chance of showers and more storms.

Please send snow! ;)

Thanks Teila...speedy recovery to you!!

Snow sucks...! If we get it on Christmas Day or close too it that's enough for me. I don't like intolerable heat either so I feel for you there.

I thought is was humorous when my Dottie stared crowing, but after her demise, researched the issue. I don't recall the exact stats - but something around 80% of commercial layers develop ovarian tumors! That is why they use commercial hens in human ovarian cancer research.

I have a poultry pathology book which gives several causes ( all terminal) that would explain hen virilzation syndromes. Only antidotal reports sound humorous. Those list stress, absence of roosters as possible causes. And for my Road Runner, I do hope it's just that she's trying to get Lille to come out of the coop in the morning.

Dottie had a ridiculous sounding attempt, but RR really, really sounds like a real rooster - but since she is still laying eggs, I'm hoping her estrogen producing ovary is OK.

But there has to some reason to the old saying " Neither comes to a good end, a whistling woman or a crowning hen"....

Personally I never liked to whistle

Take care of yourself Teila! (I did have to laugh a bit about the "what are you doing"...my husband says that to me at least once a day, lol.)

I'll make a deal with you, I'll send you snow in the winter and you send me rain in the summer. Work for you?
