The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Bunnylady, I hope your chicks make it. My philosophy is to give them any possible chance too. Last time we hatched some quail eggs there was one that kept worrying at its backside and falling over then not being able to get back up. I didn't have a good feeling and it did die the next day. With quail especially you always seem to lose one or two.

Debby, I'm glad you made it home in one piece - that's a bit scary. I have no experience with snow. Our current weather is very humid. I just wish it would rain some more.

Our babies are doing great. The finches are such little characters and not afraid of anything. They now tell me every 2 hours that they are hungry (I was feeding them every 3 hours) and they have started flying to me. The Bourkes are scared of their own shadows by comparison, though Rosie (the smaller) is the braver of the two! Everyone is still chewing on seeds but I don't think anyone has worked out how to crack them yet.

Pie

Rosie - hoping this one is a girl judging by the slightly paler colouring and less blue than Pie.

And I was very pleased that my Java finch on eggs does have a male helping out. I found them both in the nest yesterday. The eggs don't look far off hatching, though one doesn't look like it's alive anymore. But 3 babies will be a good number for them to look after - I'll keep a close eye on them though to make sure they are keeping up with the demands of parenthood.

JaeG, I'm in love with your Bourkes!

Why not raise the chicks out in the coop or run with the adults from the start? I do it all the time, and I'm so glad I do because I have total integration and have the brooder broken down and removed by the time the Littles are 4 weeks old. The mess, the dust and all that garbage is outside, and the chicks get used to natural day/night cycles from day one. Just a thought.....

Off today, studying on integrating new chicks to my 4 yo hens.   Gotta make a decision soon on newbies or not :/ .

Sorry you're working, but somebody has to :)

I had 6 new babies last spring and they adjusted pretty good by the time we put them with the big girls. I have 2 coops we attached with a little run in between and the little girls were on one side and the big girls on the other. They could see the big girls for a couple months from their side so it wasnt a SURPRISE when i put them together. There was the usual pecking order thing. I want a few new ones in the spring again. I'd like more EE's and a couple white leghorns. What kind do you want?

I had to run into town for errands this morning. That turned into the scariest drive I've had this winter. Before I could get back home the snow started falling, the wind was blowing and visibility dropped fast to about 25 feet. The only thing that showed me where the road was were the scrubby prairie weeds poking up through the drifts on either side of the road.

That was a lonnnng 12 miles. And of course, I got stuck in the driveway trying to get the car back in the garage. Fortunately one of my errands included picking up a snow shovel. And even more fortunately, the young guy that works for DH was at our house for lunch and dug me out.

Alls well that ended well, but I don't think I'll be going any where for a couple days. It's going to take that long to get over the shakes.

Been there and done that Debby...glad your home safely. The last bad one i drove in my oldest was in 6th grade and they were on their class trip to the science museum and the state capital...hubby was with as a chaperone. They cancelled school here so i had to leave work and son number 2 and i headed home...scary as we couldn't see crap! The weather wasn't bad in the cities but they still cancelled the capital (even though they were there) and sent them home right into the storm. My son was mad for a long time about missing the capital.

Howdy folks

Tee hee at International Polar Bear Day .. loved the pics!

So happy you made it home OK!

Bunnylady congrats on the hatch, albeit a little frazzling.

As always, beautiful pics J!

On the subject of sleep .. hubby doesn’t fall asleep when his head hits the pillow, he does it on the way down the hallway to the bedroom

Have fun everyone! Back to it ................

Good morning!

J, that's funny about the finches (Luvy & Valentine, right?) letting you know when they want to eat...sounds like they have you well trained! The Bourkes just keep getting prettier and prettier

Keep those pictures coming, I've totally enjoyed seeing the little ones growing.

Dawn, always a good reminder about what to keep in the car during winter. I do have a blanket and water in there. Funny (or maybe not) I chose a red SUV last year so if I ended up in a snowbank, my odds were better for being found

Blooie, I thought about you & Ken while I was slogging my way home yesterday. You guys travel so much and I know you've had your share of nasty driving weather. You're my hero!

DMC, sending kids out into a storm seems like bad judgement on someone's part. Glad it all ended well. Where do you get your chicks? Do you order them or get them at a farm store? The two places I've seen chicks for sale here (TSC and Baumgaars (sp?)) didn't have any real variety.

Sunflour, if getting more chicks this year won't work with your schedule, there's always next year. (But if I were you, I'd get them 'cause that's just the kind of person I am. And an enabler to boot!)

Teila, how much longer until your hubs has to go? Is everything starting to shape up with the moving plans? Good job on getting your FIL to be the photographer!

Have a good day everyone, I'm off to find another cup of coffee!

If I had 2 coops it would be easy, but I have only one raised coop and the coop cannot be divided, and not a lot of room in the run for a division - especially if integration takes as long as my last experience. I am still sitting on the fence on a final decision - will have to make up my mind next week :)
