The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Telia, congratulations on your new badge! Loved the goat too - sounds like something I'd do. Not sure I'd get away with it at the moment but I've always loved goats.

Lasagne sounds delicious N F C. It's just on lunchtime here and it is so hot and sticky, it's awful! The humidity is killing me (76% according to my hygrometer)! So I might pass this time around.

I had to clean out Pinkie's nest box. It was getting pretty disgusting. All 3 babies are fat as puddings and they all look a good size. I think I'll leave this lot with her and give the male a chance to be a Daddy. The male takes over feeding the chicks once they fledge, while the female starts laying again. I might hand rear their 3rd clutch and take their box down then. I can give the chicks some hand rearing formula once a day and handle them lots to tame them a bit as Pinkie spends most of her day out of the box now, especially in this heat!

My Javas are so close to fledging. I'll download my camera and put up an updated photo of them when I get a turn on the computer (the kids are using it at the moment). One has earned the name Rowdy as it's loud, and not just when it wants to be fed. It likes a good chat.

Looking forward to seeing your newest pictures J!

Ugh, humidity...that's what used to kick us in the nether regions down in Florida. You have my sympathy with that!

Okay, it isn't funny but it is funny! Go out to let the chickens out and this teeny little Silkie roo decided TODAY, in the rain, was the day he was going to challenge me. ME! I got a hundred and.....well, never mind the smaller numbers, let's just say I outweigh and out-tall him significantly! So he drops the wings, gives me the evil eye, and leans forward. I was already prepared and waiting to give him a little discipline, a little upside-down-under-the-arm-for-awhile treatment. So just as he launches to take a flying leap at me, one of the standards came barreling full tilt between us with her eye on the prize (whatever that was) and knocked him hiney over beak in mid-air!! He landed hard in a water puddle. He was totally shocked! And do you think he blamed his lady? Nope. It must have been all my fault! So for the rest of chore time he avoided me like I had the plague.....shooting me dirty looks through his muddy topknot and trying to look all tough, when all he looked like was a wet, dirty Q-tip! ROFL He won't try it again... But it was a good giggle when it happened

Hey Blooie, whatever it takes to make the little man know what's what!

(And that was funny!)

That's the youngest on the left who is a bit shy, the eldest in the centre who is very quiet, and the middle child (Rowdy) on the right - leader of the pack I'd say. You can see a hint of their colours coming through.

And here's my favourite quail chick (both photos are the same chick). It's really pretty with all its white, and it's a pretty calm chick too. They are 2 weeks old today. I had to clean the quail out this morning as they were smelly, and not because of bad housekeeping - it's just this humidity, plus they were on hay which was still reasonably green which wouldn't have helped. So now they are on shavings. We have the remnants of cyclone Debbie headed for us but it'll just be a lot of slow moving rain for us. Some places are being warned that there's a chance of floods but Auckland shouldn't get too much.

Blooie, you did make me laugh - little up-start! I can't think of anything more sorry looking than a wet, muddy, white silkie.

Loved the goat funny Teila. You enjoy that badge, you worked hard for it!

I'm still trying to catch up on the new members that slipped in while I was out of town yesterday. I'll get them yet!

Have a lasagna in the oven and will make a salad in a bit. Anyone want to come for dinner?

Yes! I'll bring the garlic toast

Jae, look at all the FEATHERS on them...they look absolutely plush!! (unlike a certain Silkie I could name at the moment) What kind of quail is that? If you mentioned it before I've lost track - I got all I can do to keep up with my kids and grands, let alone 91 birds!

So it looks like Debby isn't done with the Birthday Club yet, is she? Let us know how you fare in the rain!

DMC, I didn't do anything. Smudge did it! Well, he had a little help at the launch pad from a Blue Andelusian, but he did it!!

They are Japanese quail which are generally very tame and lay lovely eggs to eat, unless they turn out to be boys, then they just crow annoyingly. I'm sure hoping for lots of girls, especially after last time when we got 2 girls and 9 boys! We have Button quail too but they are just to be admired from afar. Ours will come close but do not want to be touched.

You crack me up!

I just candled my finch eggs. The societies still have 6 live eggs that aren't far off hatching, and my Java has 5 out of 6 eggs that are fertile and growing. I could see a heart beating so clearly in one of them. Amazing! Both pairs are the ones whose babies I ended up raising so time will tell if it's second time lucky.

I've also put 2 bourke eggs in with the Javas eggs as my other bourke hen must've got a night fright and hurt herself as she's on the cage floor. She's done it before and recovered. She's not egg bound and yelled at me very loudly when I tried to put food near her, scuttling away as she threatened to bite me. I very much doubt they will be fertile but just in case.

I haven't caught my button quail off her nest, other than the first day she started sitting when I counted her eggs, to be able to have a nosy at her eggs and see if they are fertile. Knowing my luck they will all be!

We are in for a stinking hot night. I'll have to close all the windows and doors soon before the mosquitoes invade, but I don't want to!
