The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

So excited I just had to share! Check out the size of this thing!

They had some tree loppers on site so to keep Jessie safe they popped her into the now partially wired run. Now, factoring in that Jessie is your average sized border collie and we only have 5 x bantams

I might have to get more chickens! lol

Wow Teila, you'll definitely need more bantams to fill up that gorgeous run. Your girls will be in paradise!

Thought you guys would like some updated pictures of my other 4 rascals. We are pretty sure Luvy and Valentine are both boys as they both mutter and chatter to themselves (which is quite un-finch-like but girls will only do a short 'cheep' sound). I'm very pleased about this as they are siblings. I could give them eggs to incubate, hatch and raise at some point as that is often why people keep Society finches - because they are such good foster parents, especially a pair of boys.

I gave them a nest to sleep in, which they do, and they've been trying to rip up the newspaper to add to the nest. I gave them some fresh straw so they have loved playing in that. Rosie and Pie just had to check out the nest too (which also has the remains of a bird toy in it).

Luvy

Valentine and Luvy's mother has hatched 3 chicks so far with 3 more to go (maybe). I'm not sure if the other finches are helping her or just being nosy. I'll keep a close eye on the babies to make sure they are being looked after properly. I don't want a repeat of last time with 3 dead babies and these 2 at death's door.

Hey Guys n' Gals .. I have an actual chicken related question! lol

The tree lopper was brought in to remove 3 very large palms which were close to the house and interfering with the installation of the new guttering. After I got the pictures I was quickly on the phone to hubby to ask what had been done with the off cuts and he said that the majority of them had been taken away but he had kept 5 or 6 because he knew I would have a use for them!

Anyways, my thought was to pop them in the run, in a cluster but at staggered heights for the girls to perch on.

My question .. They are palm stumps; do you think they will be OK for the girls to sit on and possibly clean their beaks on or could there be a toxicity risk?

Telia, we don't have palms so never researched the issue - and, as is the usual case, there's no poultry information easily discovered.

For mammals it seems eating the foliage is the main toxicity, but on types with spines those obviously are problems. Most sites states ALL parts have potential serious toxicity.

I found a couple of sites mentioning the wood can harbor/attract "dangerous" bugs, fungi -

My rule of thumb ( after exposing my flock to things I later learned could be toxic) is that if you aren't certain and have concerns, then don't use them.

Have you posted under managing your flock ? the question may get more visibility there and someone with real info may know the answer.

Why not opt for upside down pot sitters or clay pots, or large stones ? they would look lovely and offer the same function.

Good morning Sunflour! How are you feeling this morning? I was wondering about the chicks too. I bet she's absolutely giddy today if she has new chicks and gets to hook up with Blooie

.

I'm a little worried Debby has not posted anything this am,....hopefully she is either drooling over her new flock or stayed up all night watching and taking pics of them.
Or she wasn't able to get them yesterday? I know that disappointment and went into a big pout.

Is today the Debby and Blooie Day?? Maybe Debby stayed up cleaning all night.
