I love this stuff, just love hearing about dogs and how their people felt about them.

Well, here is ya some eye candy then....I'll be bringing our new addition home in about 3-4wks....this is Gabriele....Gabbie for short....View attachment 1186397 View attachment 1186399 ...she is an AKC german shepherd....![]()
Too CUTE!!! Looking forward to the updates!
Our dog hates being outside by herself. She'd much rather be tucked up on her bed inside with her family.
Teila, any news on the stray? Poor thing! Hopefully the microchip will lead them to the right person.
We will hopefully be getting a new fridge as there was a lot wrong with it apparently. The technician has submitted his report and recommended we are given a new one. The loan one is a stainless steel one which now has sticky children fingers and hand marks all over it. I do prefer a white fridge for just that reason!
I placed a dog once and the silly people had a party the same day they adopted her. People were running in and out of the house, and the dog ran away. I was quite pregnant at the time and very upset. Walked all over looking for her. A troop of boy scouts found her and located me through the Canadian Kennel club. She did not go back to those people.
Yeah, I do seem to attract the lost ones and we were having a chuckle about that last night. In Brisbane, I 'found' two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in my yard but luckily they had tags with a phone number and the owner was so pleased to get them back, a tradesman having left the gate open. Then there was the Lemon Border Collie [neglected] who I did not want to return to it's owner and told the RSPCA that. Just recently there was Omu and now Coffy .. I think, being an animal lover, I probably notice more than some people and where some people on the beach would have ignored Coffy and left her to run, panicked, I couldn't do that.
That is a good point and I do wonder if she is not local then she could have jumped or fallen off a ute etc, been lost by a tourist [we have a few of those].
Dog's and I think all animals have an extraordinary sense of who can be trusted. I used to get in trouble when greeting new arrivals. My place in line was just in front of the working dogs and handlers. I'd have my hands behind my back and next thing you know, there's a nose in my hands looking for a chin scratch. The officer handling the dog would always yell at me, and my answer was I didn't start it.One of those dogs saved my life one night and I really broke protocol. She got a big hug, lots of scratching and a steak.
One of the Shelties i bred and sold to a priest saved him from a fire one night when he was sleeping. He was reluctant to get a dog since he had no experience with one , but needed to keep the sheep out of the garden. Needless to say, he ended up a very happy owner.
Some people need special kinds of dogs!
Some people just do not listen. I told them she was going to take time to adapt and though she was obedience trained, if she got scared she could get out and run. Lots of Shelties are like that. She was an adult dog in a new place. She needed time to adapt.
People are silly sometimes. It is hard for them to understand that there are differences in temperament to consider.
It would be best to avoid a loud party anytime you get a new pet though. Seems like common sense...lacking with them though!
You know what they say about common sense...it's not all that common![]()
Husband was trying to get the fire going. He kept fiddling around and working on it, adding to it. Never did do much. I went over, put 2 small pieces of kindling in a certain way and it started burning merrily! Husband was so amazed and annoyed he swore!![]()
I remember when DW brought my avatar home. She was terrified. Apparently her original owner dumped her, her brother and her mom when he got a mixed breed. Throughout her life, I only heard her cry once (electric fence) when she was awake but she would cry in her sleep. When she wouldn't quit shaking, DW put her on my shoulder and she curled up and went to sleep. We named her prancer because her paws were so big for her little body that the only way she could move without tripping over herself was to prance or jump. I really miss her.![]()
Dogs are so special! All they ask is to be with us, fed, and loved! What a deal!
If you doubt this, just read some of the threads requesting help.![]()
I've had a LOT of dogs in my lifetime. There is one that I still tear up over, and he has been dead for 40 + years. Just made myself tear up as I typed this. Silly old man.
Some dogs are just super special! My Papillon , Jenny was one of those. Such a happy dog, always!
I want to get an LGD, but don't know if I can do it. I get such an attachment to dogs.
I get'cha LGD are not supposed to be house dogs. They are to be raised with whatever animals they are meant to protect. I could never have dog outside all the time. I'd worry myself sick about them.
I don't think I can do it.
I had one, he was quite dedicated but also liked to see people.
Maybe you could adopt an adult dog. Harder to leave a pup alone.
I have had outside dogs, inside dogs, and those that would go in or out. There are some that really don't care about being inside and if they are put in will tear everything up to get back outside. Many people attempt to "Humanize" every animal and apply human emotions, characteristics, and desires to them....but, they are what they were created to be and no amount of hope, wishing, or wanting for them to change will never do anything but frustrate the owner and animal alike. A chicken will never take to the water like a duck, and a duck will never scratch and peck like a chicken....a fish is just happy as a lark spending his life in water, and a tortise would drown if left in the water. So, an LGD is only happy when it has charges to watch over and protect, they could care less about listening to TV or being cooped up inside when there is so much going on outside to hear, see, and smell in alerting ya to the present dangers and warning those things to stay away....or else. We have cats that are outside cats and some that are inside cats....dogs are no different....the breeds were developed for specific purposes, so whatever ya wish for a dog to do there is a breed that will "Fit the Bill".....![]()
But, you can be kind to a LGD and take care of it. Ours was afraid of men. The guy would put him on a chain attached to a tire if he went under the fence. My husband was nice to the dog and the dog changed and learned to play. But we did not bring him in the house. He slept with the goats during the day, patrolled at night.
We have two LGD's. I don't agree with not handling them at all like people say. I wish I'd handled them more. I always worked with putting my hands on all parts of their bodies so if the day ever came where they were in a fight...I could handle them and they'd already be accustomed to my handling. But we're friendly with them now and they're concern is still there for the sheep. I love LGD's so much more than I expected. Our dogs are a Pyrenees and a Pyrenees/Maremma cross. They'd so much more laid back than collies/collie crosses.
All of our pets live outside. They are coated for the climate and have been acclimatized since day one. They'd be so uncomfortable if we tried bringing them in. I did it once for fun with my collie/german shepherd cross during the winter. He couldn't get outside fast enough. He was a silly guy though. He was free to roam our yard and had an insulated dog house. Yet on more than one occasion he'd be curled up on the top of the snow bank covered in snow.![]()

Aaaaaaw CntryBoy777 Gabbie is adorable!
My special girl, who I am pretty sure I have already told you all about, was Charlie-Bear a Cavalier King Charles x Border Collie.
I was at a low point in my life and on walking passed a pet shop, she picked me! I literally had nowhere to live at that time and had to ask the shop owner to keep her for me while I secured accommodation. Charlie-Bear got attacked by another dog and had her skull fractured when she was only a couple of months old and I nearly lost her. Sadly, possibly due to scar tissue, she developed epilepsy when she was around two years old but we managed to control it to the occasional break through seizure with medication. Later in life, she had also developed pancreatitis and the seizures were no longer controllable with medication. She started to have episodes of long periods of blindness following the seizures which were very traumatic for her. I had to make the heart breaking decision to let her go on Christmas Day in 2010 after a particularly severe seizure. She was 11. The Vet said she did really well to survive as long as she did.
As I was renting, I had her cremated because I was not leaving her in a strange place and she is now sitting next to FIL’s dog Inu who, passed 5 years ago, in their respective urns in the lounge room.
I have not been able to bring myself to get another dog and still miss Charlie-Bear so very much. As you know, we now live with my FIL and he has a dog, Jessie and I find myself getting more and more attached to her which is scary.
I love our fur and feathered babies and losing any of them is so difficult. I always say, no more but never learn![]()

Great news on the fridge .. I hope it arrives sooner rather than later and yeah, I hear ya when it comes to SS. White 'white goods' for me too
No news on Coffy yet. Hubby is at work at the moment but I might know something when he gets home this evening.
I always think the stainless steel stuff is so sterile, like lockers in a morque. I rather have white any day.
Jae I'm with you. I lost my last Cocker Jan.1989 I haven't wanted to get another one since then. Just too much pain. I used to raise them and then just kept the oldies. He was the last of the 14 yr. to have to be put down. The two others were born earlier than him but, they just made it to 14 also.
