The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I apologize to any that it may upset, but I will share the events without the pic. I was out on the porch looking at the stars tonite and heard the ducks quacking, but not their alert call....this is unusual for them at nite, so I decided to check it out....went to the backdoor with a flashlight and shined it in their yard....their pen is separate and lined with half inch hardware cloth....there were 2 shining eyes looking back at me, but thought it was one of the cats....just in case tho, I grabbed the 22....I walked to the backside of their yard so the dicks wouldn't be inline with a shot and saw it was a huge possum.....needless to say it will no longer be making any nitely visits....it was a very large male. I always tell them to let me know if something is around and I'll take care of it...they did...and I did. I told them it was okay and they could settle down....they did. I know it may sound crazy, but I sure talk to all my animals just like they can understand....sometimes I really think they do.....:)

I'm so glad you didn't suffer any losses! Good for you on taking care of the threat (and for communicating so well with your animals).

Of course our animals understand us. :p And who else can you talk absolute nonsense to without fear of judgement? It doesn't take much sweet talking for my cockatiel babies to relax and feel more at home. Heck, I probably talk to my animals more than I talk to my kids. Isn't that terrible?

I am not upset .. x 2 on the Good for You!

While I am obviously an animal lover, I will not be responsible for my actions if someone or something hurts any of my babies!

We are lucky enough to have the cute and cuddly, non chicken [or duck] eating possums. Well, not cuddly, they still have claws ;)

They aren't so cute and cuddly here though sadly (though they are pretty cute as I've met the odd pet one). They decimate our native bush and out compete our native birds :(. No danger to chickens though thankfully.

:weeNew fridge is coming tomorrow! Just means I have to clean the loan one - children and stainless steel do not mix well. There are grubby, greasy little finger/hand marks all over this one. I like my appliances white for that very reason.

I learned how to shoot a gun because fox we’re killing my chickens so that doesn’t upset me...I get it!

Good deal J, hope this one works better for you than the last one! I like white appliances too :D

If your birds go back to laying 6 weeks after they start to moult, you are doing WAY better than I am. It is usually 2.5 months minimum.

Re fake eggs. I made one out of a piece of cherry. It isn't as realistic as that ceramic one but I did have to take it back out to the coop the first time DW found it. Most of my fake eggs are plastic.

Road Runner has in the past laid throughout every molt, this is the first time she has taken a break- I think she deserved a vacation :)

That cherry egg must have looked real - I wonder if the chickens are really fooled by plastic?

No apologies needed - glad your ducks called you to get rid of that varmint. Be on the lookout, there are likely many more. Do you leave animal food out or accessible? They are very stealth animals and can come and go quietly. In our area they are nasty predators, but dumb. You can trap them in a rabbit live trap quite easily. If you have access to one, why not place one out and a game camera to see if there are more around

Congrats on the fridge, hope this one works well for you. I'm sure you know but it will take 24 hours to get totally cool - I got a new one recently and didn't know that .

I know Buddy understands me and I understand him, we talk all the time :D.

We also talk to our chickens, I caught DH on the live camera this week ( he was unaware I was watching) during evening flock tending, and he was talking to them and they were all quite attentive :D but doubt they really knew what he was talking about :gig

I'm certain they understand us. And it's never a good idea for a opossum to get anywhere near the kids. They make a wonderful addition to the compost pile.

Naw, we don't keep any open food out except for the naturally occurring food that poaaums will eat....we have plenty of them around here and coons too. They are the reason the birds are locked up at nite and their house is pretty close to the house....we make sure they are put up before dark around here and the free range chickens are closed up in their yard for a couple of hours before sundown. We have outside cats and the neighbor does too, so I don't set traps because releasing the cats would be a daily chore, so I keep a sharp eye out and take care of any predator that is seen....keeping them thinned out is the only way to have half a chance of protecting our animals. Also, this is the reason there aren't any trees inside either of the bird yards and will never be.....:)

Yes, I do talk to the animals here. They listen and usually seem interested in what I say. It of course helps that I am the one that feeds them! They better listen!

And speaking of Thanksgiving...
