The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Good Morning Friends :hugs

Sorry Blooie .. bad Teila! :smack

Great pics DMC!

Usual Sunday for me .. finish housework, try and get back in to Ingham for the weekly groceries and to check if hubby is going to be able to go to work tomorrow, then pottering.

Some pics from the flooding. Snakes and crocodiles are now a problem, swimming in the flood waters  The water is slowly receding but now there is the issue of the smell and mosquitoes. The residents have not lost their sense of humour and good spirit.

Folks, I know many will enjoy this.. My two year old granddaughter loves to dance. DW brought out her record player and tonight we introduced her to big bands. She got to dance with Red Nichols, benny goodman, glen miller and the dorsey's... DW also had a beach boys album and she loved it... After the music stopped she drug out her keyboard. Think the movie BIG.... The one you use with your feet. and said "teach me".... So, the only two songs I can remember on a key board are mary had a little lamb and feelings. So that's what I taught her tonight. I wonder if she'll remember in the morning.

Awww that is adorable!!

Thanks for all the info! Yeah, idk what he saw because he went in the other room but he said it was scaly and bacteria. Could you see even a slight indication of mites with just tape? I did find it kind of odd he didn't do a skin scraping but at the time figured tape was the same. Maybe not. But he is already seeming better and wanting to play so as long as he continues improving I won't question.

Our vet is kind of old school idk. He is very nice, great with the animals, and very reasonable, all of which are very important, but the office is tiny and building pretty old so probably not very much updated equipment? Idk. Although skin scraping isn't exactly a new revolutionary technique but still.

I am nervous about taking him to another busier vet with more dogs because he's not that great with other dogs.

But he seems to be getting better already so I'm happy. But if it comes back or if he doesn't improve then I might consider a second opinion.

And ah okay! Putting something different in is probably a good idea!

Sorry about all the trouble with the seizures :(

Hopefully you figure it out soon!

And aww cute!

I would love to be in an area where horses just ride down the sidewalk haha

Finished editing hah

Yes, I'd forgotten how loud the movies are - me and DH commented on that fact at exactly the same time! But it was a good movie - we saw Black Panther. I like a good super hero movie and it was thought provoking, the fighting was very dramatic but not violent (with very little blood and certainly no gore) and there was nothing sexual about it which is a refreshing change. Most super hero movies I wouldn't let even older kids watch, but that one I would. The costumes were beautiful, there was some great humour in it, and it had a nice dose of 'girl power' too.

I got out early and cleaned out the chickens. I was very relieved not to find even a hint of red mites anywhere. Now I've got a few things I 'should' do but I kind of want to enjoy my day too, so I won't go crazy on the housework. I really do need to vacuum though - there are feathers from quail and cockatiels everywhere!

Kelsey, I'm glad Gator is hopefully on the road to recover, poor boy. There's nothing worse than being itchy. I have to say my first thought was mange mites of some kind so maybe you could ask if that could be a factor next time you talk to the vet.

Thank you! I might ask! It's funny because it some ways he is more perky/active but then in other ways he is lazier/sleepier. I walked in, didn't notice, ate my pizza didn't notice, stood in front of him, didn't notice till I threw pizza crust at his face LOL

But I think he's partly going deaf so he couldn't really hear very well but then also the benadryl is conking him out. He might have also worn himself out today/overdone it? He went to the dump, was outside a while, kept wanting to play, etc., etc.

I think he only appears perkier because he is not miserable trying to scratch himself raw so he is back to normal basically. :)

But then with the benadryl he is sleepy.

Because he's basically just been laying around licking himself or pacing around the first floor or following people. Now he's calmed down.

I do think I need to wash his bed though and/or put a blanket on it so he doesn't get the condition a second time.

As I said, he was there and I wasn’t, so I’m sure he saw things that pointed him in another direction. I won’t try to second guess him - I was just curious. Glad the dog is feeling better already.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what he saw and sorry if my post came across at all rude, I kmew you were just curious but basically just meant as long as he's improving I am happy even if his method should have been better ha

Also idk if you saw but my post posted slightly early before I finished typing. I didn't anything really important but kind of somewhat explained why he did the tape thing. I quoted the revised version above but basically the vet office is tiny and an older building and he's kind of old school/only do what's necessary so I think sometimes he doesn't do a million tests to try not to charge people too much? Idk. But skin scraping seems pretty basic and certainly not an unnecessary test by any means but idk, maybe he usually has good results just from doing the tape thing and is able to treat and cure stuff?

But I guess I am also trying to say they don't have a lot of the modern equipment some places have and is cheaper than most vets which i like having such a large dog.

That said sometimes I do think it might be nice to have a different vet that maybe suggests different treatments.

Cause I do wonder if this isn't just a one time problem.

I know you only recently came back but over the summer he started losing muscle in his head and the vet said he thought it could be some sort of muscular myopathy (upon Googling at the time, I think the technical term is masticatory muscular myositis?) And it was pretty rare so he didn't know much about it but would research it more. Said to watch out for trouble eating.

Doing our own research we learned high steroid doses for 6 months could stop it but he didn't do that and we didn't ask. We did out him on steroids though but not super high dose or long term.

But Gator also does not have the jaw problems associated with it. He can still open and close his jaw perfectly fine and fully open it. He has no problems eating.

So I wonder if maybe it is not that disease?

But he has lost most of the muscle in the top of his head. He used to have a nice, full head and now it is all bone. He's always had a slight crown/bump due to the Pyrenees but it is very pronounced now. Next to his eyes/under the jaw bone is also sunken in now.

Anyway, long story short, the second incident and one I feel may be related is over the summer he also got stung by a bee and his eye swelled up soo much and he lost a lot of hair on his eye, naturally. He looked horrible. But we decided to try Benadryl and it worked at first but then his face would get worse. And idk, long story short, he looked BAD for like a week or two and I probably should have taken him in sooner but he has gotten stung before and Benadryl has ALWAYS worked. Normally his ear just swells up a bit. This time was worse but i figured it would still work. And it did to a point, the swelling went down a lot, which is why I didn't take him in right away. But he still wasn't getting hair back and wasn't looking quite right and had green goop coming out of his eye. Which is when we took him. I guess it was infected? So vet put him on antibiotics. He did get better eventually.

But very long story slightly shortened, first some sort of sting taking forever to heal, now a skin infection, plus whatever is going on with his head, and going deaf. I wonder if it isn't an immune systen failure. :(

Also i don't know for sure it was a bee but I assumed it was.

But yeah.
