That's true! But they might run out of air?

And LOL OMG that is hilarious and adorable! I used to love that song

Good idea!

Sooooo adorable!! Are you keeping any?

Maybe we could start it again

Right!? Thankfully I think they moved on but idk.

And what is a dehydrator? Are they expensive? We grew herbs last year but fresh they were ehhh. I'd like to dry them. Last year I even put some in the sun on the window sill lol and we of course cooked with them.

Some birds are, some aren't. I used to have a parakeet that LOVED country music! I don't even like much country music but I had a big phase in middle school like 7th grade where I loved it and bought all these country albums on iTunes and listened to it all the time LOL he loved it though and would bob his head aha

Maybe she convinced them lol

LOL ya never know

That far though? How far is it RJ?

So sorry cap

Agreed

You should do it!

Or kick it

Awwww.

LOL how cute. And I am also catching up. Sadly I don't even read most anymore. I don't follow that many nut skip to the last page to make the notification go away lol

Like a gardening one and a goat one i follow. I actually want to read the goat one but am lazy lol

The only ones I actually bother to read are this and the café.

Well, and the horse thread and prayer thread but both have been really inactive lately.

And an animal shelter one that posts cute dog pics lol

We should start it again

You sound like a great bus driver!!!

Oh wow lucky it was empty and going slow! Sad about the stroke though.

Oh wow how scary!

Aw no :(

Wow lucky she was okay

X2

Good you found someone for the future!

And aw I'm sure the poor thing is shell shocked! New house, all her friends died, scary trip, etc.

Not necessarily. Not if you switch her name to mean Han Solo :p

That's good!

I need to dehydrate some

LOL

I've never dried my own and fresh was good but idk
I guess you are not sick after all!

Good afternoon friends :hugs

Kelsey A dehydrator is a temperature controlled cabinet which basically dries foodstuff to preserve it. I am on my second dehydrator after I wore the other one out using it for herbs, chilies, fruit and making my own sweet potato chips etc.

My new one is an upgrade from the one I wore out; it was my first dehydrator so I did not go too big or too expensive because I was not sure how often I would use it. It only cost me $75.

Knowing that I used it heaps, my new one I was happy to pay $175 for; it is bigger and has digital temperature control and a timer. It is also much quieter than my old one:

Cap great news that Solo appears to be improving! :clap

Maybe the bags were airlocked/vacuum sealed and that's why you couldn't feel the kibble and the ones that you could feel, the seal had broken.. That's the case with coffee. If it's not a brick, don't buy it.

That could be! My dad mentioned something about the vacuum seal too and said it's actually better as it means no air has gotten in and it'd be fresher. That must be it as I can't imagine they would sell frozen food ha

But most dog food bags, at least that I've seen, have not been that vacuum sealed and you can hear the kibble

What's that? I heard Kdog mention Ice cream parlor.

Yup! Found completely by accident too but a total happy accident ha a little too cold for ice cream today but I say never too cold :p

It was actually lucky as a majority of places down there are seasonal or only open till 4 or 5 but this place is year round and open till 9!

Adorable too. Lots of pink and oldies music.

What flavor did you get? Cone or sundae or shake/malt. I need to know :yesss:

I was boring and just got strawberry on a sugar cone. My mom got moose tracks though. I didn't notice all the sundaes until after I ordered!

I would like to come back when it's a bit warmer and try a sundae or a root beer float! They had lots of delicious looking sundaes!

I had Rocky Road tonight. That is the last of the ice cream. I am giving up my favorite chocolates, mallow cups. Already gave up soda. Trying to cut back sugar. That sucks too. But i need to lose weight.

Sounds delicious!

Sugar is so hard to give up. :(

I guess you are not sick after all!

Lol nope!

And awww how cute!!

Rocky Road ice cream. I have a rain check at Walgreens when they had a sale but, no Rocky Road. I went back a few days later, still empty.:barnie

That seriously stinks!

Good afternoon friends :hugs

Thanks for the info! That seems somewhat expensive considering I may not use it much but it's also not outrageously or prohibitively expensive and I may end up using it, who knows. It sure seems a lot easier than trying to try herbs on the window sill! Which btw does not work and they just wilt haha

Can you dehydrate vegetables?

And what is the advantage of dehydrating over canning, pickling, jelly/jams, etc. etc. Or just fresh? If you know?

Thanks.

How do you know how long something needs to be in the dehydrator, in particular the sweet potato chips. I read your post and got hungry Teila.

I am hungry too. Might be time for a midnight snack. Well, 3 am snack lol

Hey Diva

Herbs are easy, when they are crunchy, they are done ;)

Moister foods can take a while .. in my old dehydrator, the chips took 18 hours; I am not sure about this one as I have not tried them yet in it.

For me, it has just been trial and error and learning to judge when stuff is done but basically if it is crunchy and snaps, not bends, it is done.

Fruit also takes a while because it is moist but I have eaten bananas, strawberries, apricots etc months after buying them in bulk when in season and cheap and dehydrating them. Because the fruit has been dehydrated it is actually more flavour intensive.

I saw an ad for Kelpies at the Agway today and got excited because I never see them around here and used to want one and they are pretty rare but then I later realized it is actually KOOLIES I decided I wanted and that are the true rare ones. But anyway, now I have been researching Kelpies and want one. I actually did want Kelpies a while ago but then in researching them I found the koolie/coolie, which I decided is better, but those are sooo hard to find as there are like no USA breeders. Kelpie might be easier.

Anyway, curious if anyone has experience with either breed? Maybe some of our Aussie/NZ friends have seen them around?

My concern is, like the ACD, they seem to be a more independent breed bred to work more away from the handler unlike a border collie or Australian shepherd? But I may be wrong.

And of course the VERY high energy level and intelligence.

And I realize my breed interests seem to change like every week or daily sometimes ha but that doesn't mean I completely abandon my other interests or will go buy new breed ASAP. For instance, I still feel that a Golden or Lab may be better, especially as I love their goofy nature, but this does seem like a really cool breed to eventually own when I can. Maybe I could hike or bike with it or do agility or tricks? I realize not a good pet dog to just lounge around but I love doing stuff with my dogs. But I also gotta be realistic about whether I could handle the energy and needs of a high drive, high energy, workaholic, herding breed, which is why I still say a retriever may be best but idk. It might be good for me to have a dog that needs work.

Anyway, I also realize I've been bringing up dogs lately so really sorry about that.

I just thought that this was an interesting breed that people may not have heard of or know much about and it could be an interesting discussion (or not if you'd rather not). Or that maybe someone has some stories or either a DO NOT GET THAT DOG or BEST DOG type advice aha I really don't know what I'm hoping for here.

Oh and also in other news BUNNY JAS STARTED LAYING AGAIN. About darn time lol I haven't collected the eggs in a while and there are two nice blue eggs in there. :D

Which is also nice cause for a while I was getting these weird colored and shaped eggs. Sometimes grayish sometimes whitish. Idk if from Bunny or Diva. But they normally lay green/olive and blue. But Bunny, the slacker, has not laid in months.

So I am very happy!

Hey Kelsey

Sorry, I do not know if there is an advantage as such.

We do also have a preserving kit and preserve also.

The advantage with the herbs is obvious, they are just sitting in a jar, ready when you want them and as I mentioned, much more aromatic than shop bought. We do use them fresh also but dehydrate when we have excess and need to prune or if they are about to go to seed; for example, Basil.

With the fruit, I can just have a container on the side with the fruit 'chips' in it and have some when I want as opposed to having to remove them from whatever they have been preserved in.

Top left is my dehydrated parsley, bottom left shop bought. Top right is my dehydrated chives, bottom left shop bought; not the best picture but you can see the colour difference.

Also, there is the satisfaction of having grown it yourself ;)
