The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Good Morning Folks....

First day off in several and it's to rain here today as well ( and glad it's not snow).

The eggs are due to hatch the same day i have my biopsy, the 20th. May hatch early as it was running hot to start with. Not sure about mixing quail of different ages, but i can put her in half of the duplex cage and them in the other half. I keep looking for quail on CL, but they are all too far away.

So sorry about Solo, only one surviving is quite sad. Hope your hatch goes well and praying your biopsy is negative :fl....kinda weird the dates fall on the same day, maybe a good omen.

Good morning everyone. Very late start here.

I posted this in another forum but didn't get answers...

I know it's not recommended to feed chickens chicken, but what about feeding them Turkey?

I made a bunch of dill pickled yellow squash last fall that came out too mushy for my liking. Is it ok to give those to the gang, or too much salt?

IMO feeding chicken or turkey meat won't hurt them, BUT commercial poultry have antibiotics, steroids and likely growth hormones in them and I would only give them small amounts of either if they were labeled to be "organic" without those...but who knows how truthful the industry is :duc.

Wonder if they would like any pickled item? Too much salt would be a concern.

My biggest mistake was giving mine processed meats - like hot dogs....they love them but get the squirts and then have to bath those behinds :sick

:barnieThat can be frustrating!

Good to see you this morning, been busy working?

Yep, we have 2 folks taking off way too much time, so back to being scheduled too many days in a row.

Bitty does come out a couple of times a day with encouragement - but I did have to give her water one evening in the nest. I think this will be her 3rd week so hopefully she'll get over it soon...but if not may have to use some of the broody breaking ideas :(

I used to have a non-stop broody in the FL flock. I finally resorted to using the broody buster cage with a hardware cloth bottom and got some limited results from that. After being in that for a couple days, she'd seem to be over it but within a week or two, she'd be back to her old broody self. I gave up and re-homed her to a friend that said she wanted her for sitting on fertile eggs.

Actually it's my opine that one cannot really use physical or mechanical methods to change their hormones - but I did remove the nest curtains and on warm sunny days, we leave the door to the coop open....no luck thus far. The biggest problem is that she is #6 gal and with her attitude it makes it difficult for her to access food/water unless we stand guard...DH's job of course ;)
