Teila, I ran back to the house and got my .22 rifle, I keep by the backdoor, for just such emergencies. Surprised it was still there.Yikes Sean you can keep him!I am very pleased he is the gonner and not you or George… can I ask how his demise occurred? Did you chop him with something you had handy or shot him? I am just curious.
Wow Debby you have been busy! Wish I could be there! Thank you for those words, they have also helped! Awesome picture of the course!

Yep, that was the problem, my hands were both full feed cans, dropped and ran!Cool, thank you! I just had visions of you with a pail of feed in one hand a rifle in the other and I was pretty close![]()
I do not do anything for the chickens at 85. I turn on the misting system if it is going up to 100 and have a shad cloth up.
It depends on the breed. Some will start dropping their wings and 85 to 90. They start panting above 90 to 95. Some will have heat stokes over 105 and some die at 110 if you do not have a misting system. When it gets that hot, it is a good idea to do a health check each hour and bring any that look like they are having heat stoke in to cool them of in a tub of water.
I did not lose any last year to the heat but did the year before-- One that summer. When it gets over 110, some chicken owners lose a lot of them. One person with marans lost 15 in one day up by Red Bluff. It was over 115 that day though
Not precisely, the poor thing died because a parasitic wasp got in the spider's burrow and laid eggs on her. As the commentator said, she didn't die of old age. Thus they really have no idea how long a trapdoor spider can live. Apparently they never leave their burrows.
Not long enough! They originally thought a spider's lifespan was about 25 years. She beat the heck out of that and could have gone on who knows how many more years.

OMG! This is just plain spooky!
I open Facebook and this is the first thing I see randomly shared by an acquaintance who I have not confided in and do not really talk to a great deal .... complete with old typewriter!

Thank you for that Bruce; my bad, I was just repeating what I had heard; as always, varying reports
Thank You!![]()
Nope! Come hell or high-water we're opening the restaurant Tuesday, May 8th! I now have all 6 BBQ sauces made (huge vats of them) and got a 15 pound container of potato salad made up today. Brisket and pork butt is thawing out as we speak. The menus are being printed. The truck will be here Friday so once it's unloaded, DH is going to do some more meat smoking and I have cole slaw, Ranch dressing, corn bread and smokehouse beans to make. No way is that stuff going to waste
Besides, you all are coming for a meal that day...remember?![]()
That's a big 'un! Thank goodness for George!
Last year, twice, rattlesnakes feel out of a tree on the 6th hole on the golf course! Weird, they each fell out on a Friday, one week apart. That'll speed up play for sure!
We’ll be halfway there this weekend - gotta go to Riverton. I think Deb should meet us there and bring samples so I can do a little “quality control” before our big gat together at the course, whaddya think?
Snakes and spiders and wasps....<shudder>. I think every county in Wyoming has a Rattlesnake Butte in it somewhere. Pesky things!
Speaking of wildlife...we were, weren’t we?.....Ken and I had to go to Walmart today. I know, poor us. Not much to see though. Just several huge herds of elk, deer, Big Horn sheep, bison.....oh, and a very healthy looking grizzly bear.

Those are some awesome pics Blooie!
As you probably know, we do not have Walmart but we have enjoyed many pictures from there on lineI hope you were dressed appropriately

Geez @Blooie, must take forever to get places when you have to stop for all the wildlife on the road!
Um, does the course have insurance for when they are sued by a golfer that got snake bit? Or is there a waiver they have to sign that says "I will not sue the course if a rattler drops out of a tree and kills me with it's pointy teeth"?
Fortunately the people that were on the 6th hole those 2 times the snakes dropped are long-time WY cowboys & golfers and they weren't really worked up about it. I think "Play at your own risk" might be a fun to have posted though!
Just making sure it's still happening before I head outNope! Come hell or high-water we're opening the restaurant Tuesday, May 8th! Yikes! Not to change the subject but here's what i just found when I went to feed and water, and almost got bitten by...except George saved me from that fate, he started growling and that's when I saw it, 2 more steps and I'd be a gonner!
I know their around here but this is the 1st ever on my place. Such is this time of year in South Texas.

You are not happy where you’re at...go for a new adventure! I have no doubt you will do well!Good Morning Friends
Ouch Cap!
Touch wood .. I have never had an issue with my girls and the heat. I ensure they have lots of water, watermelon, shade and a mister .. if it is really hot, they just plonk themselves on the damp dirt and ride it out
Diva I do not know how hot it actually needs to be to fry an egg but I do know that they have been fried on car bonnets in outback Aus and on tarmac.
Thank you all for your kind words and support … While hubby is not concerned about how much I earn “we will be fine”, I am now going through the ‘what if’s’ .. what if I get sick? No income. What if I should find myself on my own for whatever reason; am I going to be earning enough to get by?
At the moment I have all the benefits of holiday pay, sick leave etc and while I am in a happy relationship, I have the cushion of being financially independent and a Plan B if things should go wrong. That may not be the case when I start out with my own business and I am getting to the age that finding a new, ‘secure’, regular income again if I had to would not be easy.
So, now I have two options, do I stay in a ‘secure’ job where I am not happy and stressed, or do I take the chance and do something which I believe will make me much happier but is a step into the ‘unknown’ and less ‘secure and independent’?
When I ponder the challenge ahead of me I get excited, but when I go through the ‘what if’s’ I worry that the decision is not a good one. However, on the other hand, if I say to myself “OK, then stay where you are”, that is depressing!
I know you guys n’ gals are not in a position to advise me per say, but I would appreciate your thoughts or similar experiences; act as my sounding boards so to speak? Feel free to be honest!![]()

That is absolutely perfect. These are the best words I can share with you Teila. They were a life saver to me back in 2010 when I had some really tough decisions to make (I actually had a small framed copy on my wall at work).

And it helps to keep in mind, life changes all the time. Some changes we choose and some are imposed on us...I prefer changes I choose.
