Hattie has her Dew Claws removed. She had her first vet visit before she came to us and they removed them.I won’t leave dew claws on. They are easily hidden in fur and I’ve been in on one two many surgeries where a hidden dew claw curved so much and got so long that it grew back into the leg, requiring a messy surgical removal that a puppy at a few days old wouldn’t have even felt being done as it was clipped off. There is no bone in a dew claw in tiny puppies; as they grow a little that soft cartilage becomes bone. I’ve treated the massive bleeding from dew claws in house dogs that have snagged and pulled out getting on or off furniture. Nope.
So despite all the videos in the world, and all the advice to “just keep them trimmed”, I find them virtually unnecessary in 99.9% of domesticated dogs. So I get rid of them if that makes me cruel and sadistic to other animal lovers, so be it.
If I had not watched a video I would have declawed my cats. I had no idea what they did. All 3 of mine have their claws. Some breeds of dogs have to have intact dews to be registered. And most dogs don't have them on back legs. But declawing is an entirely different thing. They literally remove the ends of the toebone . Look at your finger and imagine having the last part amputated from the third knuckle. No fingernail, cause the whole end is off. This is what people do to cats all the time. Sickening.
All of the aboveI don't know what I'm looking forward to the most. A flush toilet, being able to take a shower, or wash my hands even, or having clean dishes, or an actual stove to cook with.
