Okay .... What do they call those metal things people fill with water for stock?Bruce, in Texas, we call ponds... 'stock tanks' or sometimes just plain 'tanks'.

And is Texas one of those southern areas where "I'll be home directly" means "within a few hours after I do a bunch of things" as opposed to "I'm coming home now"??
This happened to be a topic on "A Way With Words" this past week. Seems to me "directly" means "close to now" as is the case with the caller's wife up in Michigan (IIRC) and he was from somewhere in the south. Serious miscommunication happens with such disparate meaning. I'd be calling the cops if someone said they would be here "directly" and hadn't shown up 2 hours later.
Here it depends on who's saying it and for what purpose... Someone coming to do a Job such as paint the house or work on plumbing, etc (non-critical stuff), it could mean a couple days to a couple weeks. When the heat and air guy says it, it generally means within 4 hours.yep, the metal ones we usually call 'metal tanks'....some folks call them stock tanks, too!
And your right, 'directly' is exactly that....southerners have a way of dilly-dallying around and to them that's directly.
when they 'get round to it', now if they give you a certain time, say 8:00 am, then they will be there on-time...at least the old timers will be on-time.
Most everyone down south understands what 'directly' means...when I hear some say it, I can figure in a few minutes to a few hours.![]()
When I call my heat or air guy, I'm usually the last call he has for the day, he lives just down the road from me so I'm the last one on his way home. He is always there before 5:00pm.Here it depends on who's saying it and for what purpose...
